M167 Vulcan needs wind up time.

Post by BetterDeadThanRed »

The M167 Vulcan turret that the USMC and GB (I'm assuming that's a placeholder for something more british) is basically a M61 20mm cannon and for those of you who have played the beta, the F16 now has a wind up time of about a second before it begins spitting death and destruction. This is also a M61 cannon like the Vulcan so I guess it stands to reason that both should have a second or so to spin up.

I know, this is something very minor and insignificant, but it has been bugging me to no end that the thing fires so quickly.

I don't think it has a spin up delay in real life. In fact, the miniguns mounted on the Blackhawks don't, either.

Where? I searched but its kind of difficult to find something so specific.

It may not have it in real life, but what I am basing this off of is that the M61 (same cannon mind you) on the F16 has a wind up time why shouldn't the same cannon on the VADS have it?

This is partially for balancing reasons too. The M163 should be more powerful than the ZU(something or other, 23 I think?) because it overheats faster and (should) have a delay before firing.

Here is a video of a GAU-19. Granted, its not a M61 but you can tell that there is atleast a split second before the rounds actually start comming out.

Wikipedia didn't list GB as a user of the M163, however it did say that the list was incomplete so perhaps you are right.

The newest M134/GAU-2/GAU-17 miniguns take .5 seconds to spin up to 3000 rpm. As for the Vulcan, I haven't found any data.

BlackwaterEddie, I wasn't aware that the UK ever adopted the Vulcan Air Defense System in the ground role, just as part of the Phalanx CIWS. Source?
