Remove maps for squad members

Post by Apheirox »

While debating whether or not to remove the mini-map (https://www.realitymod.com/forum/t22188 ... omise.html) I came up with the idea of disabling battlefield maps for squad members:
Strategist wrote:I just had an interesting idea myself, though: How about removing the maps (not minimap) for anyone but the squad leader? The squad members do not need a map since all they are supposed to do is stick with the squad leader. Maps are for decision-making and squad members do [should!] not make decisions.
My thoughts about this suggestion:

+Realism and role-playing. Suddenly the squad leader and squad member are not so alike anymore.

+Encourages teamplay and sticking with the squad leader and following his orders since he has better intel than you. I do not think I need to explain why this is plain awesome.

-It would make squad members extremely reliant on good squad leaders which might be a problem on public servers. However, I do not think PR should lower its level of quality to cater to idiocy.

Given your reasons, it sounds like something that this mod team would consider seriously. ie - "The squad members do not need a map since all they are supposed to do is stick with the squad leader"

Sounds like an interesting way that we could sort the teamplay aspect.

They are still keeping mini-map, right?
If that i may like it, if not it will be hell to play public

It's what you get used to.
So many players can't get over how hard it is to distinguish enemies from friendlies, when coming from vanilla. After a while, we get more talented (and the gameplay changes for the better; encouraging identification of targets)

the minimap removal would be the same. Hard to adjust to, if you use it, but better overall in terms of being more realistic.

I like this idea.
If it would be possible to remove minimap but to still have your big map then even spotting would remain useful.

Good idea, also remove the binocs from regular squad members unless they are sniper or HAT.So grunts do what they are told to do :)

What about removing the minimap for all kits other than crewman, pilot and officer since they need it the most. Crewmen, simulating on board navigation devices, pilots the same, and officers simulating the briefing they receive before the mission.
This signature is here due to lack of imagination.

It's an ok idea, but then you will have everyone start their own squad and lock it. It just wouldn't work.

NO MORE RULES regarding maps!
That aspect is fine the way it is.

I would of thought the opposite would be more realistic to be honest. I'd imagine most soldiers get issued with a standard map of the area they are working in at least.

I'd argue from a realism perspective that we shouldn't really have real time maps for anyone though (aside from the commander having GPS and such). It's all dependant on what kind tracking equipment militarys are using at the moment in my opinion maybe there's a way of tracking squads and their members through their radios and such.

I'd personally like to see the whole thing work something along the lines of;

Commanders:

Have markers on all tanks and aircraft.

Based on technological aspects markers on infantry either; real-time on squad leaders, real-time on all infantry, based on a squad perhaps having to report in their position (in a similar way to creating an RP) then having a squad marker on that point.

Very idealistically having constant GPS feed of the whole battlefield aswell, although due to lag and hardcoded kinda issues that arise with these kinds of things probably wouldn't happen though. Just though I'd throw that one out there.

Armour and Aircraft:

Have heads up GPS in the same place as current but working on the same principles as it does for Squad Leader/Commander.

Squad Leaders:

Have minimap style map that can be brought up that looks kinda like the GPS tracker used in the top right at the moment That shows all the markers available to the commander.

Squad Members:

Have normal map with no markings on other then their squads orders.

Spotting:

Instead of spotted enemies appearing on minimaps as they currently do perhaps having icons; sniper, tank etc, pointing in the direction of the enemy in the same way the objectives markers work but disappear shortly and are much less intrusive on the amount of screen used as a movement marker. Perhaps making this only work in a local area aswell as to avoid the screen becoming too cluttered and making it more relevant.

This would allow the squad leaders SOFLAM to paint targets for airforces and commanders which could appear on the heads up GPS in the same way that things are spotted at the moment but perhaps lasting a little longer on the GPS.

I can imagine most of that won't be possible and it'd make people alot blinder then before but thought it was worthwhile mentioning.

Generally speaking any [sane] trained soldier will have a map of their patrol route and/or AO.

And if they weren't issued binoculars, they would buy their own. The more appropriate binocs for the "non issue" binocs would be the little small rubber coated Bushnell ones.

Sorry, but just being direct and honest: I see no merit in this idea from a realism nor from a team play perspective.

How would you select your spawn point if the map is removed?

The other thing that comes into play in my opinion is that you join a squad and jump into the fight. You have no time to sit down and co-ordinate, pre-plan different routes and select kits etc. The live maps help with this even if they are not realistic. Especially in the face of no SL to SL communication being available.

-Well, you don't have any intel on the spawn map so that's hardly a problem. The spawn map can stay, the "M" map and CAPS LOCK MAP can go.

-And for those of you who want to remove the minimap, read this post.

I don't think they'd ever get rid of the regular map, it wouldn't make any sense anyway.
