Tank (vehicle) sights

Post by torak101 »

I'm new to PR and really enjoy playing it. Its pretty much what I wanted from BF2. (to be honest I never really played my BF2 until I came across this mod)

One thing I would like to suggest is about the tank sights.

Todays tanks (western at least) have TIS (thermal imaging systems) This is really handy for seeing through smoke or dim light/fog situations. Its a standard feature. (applies to helos and such as well)

Also, sights always have some sort of magnification. (x3, x10 ...)

This would give tanks a much greater fighting range. As they are currently used in BF2, they generally fight at to close of a range because of the limitations of the gun sights.
Getting into a discussion about the lack of an LRF (laser range finder, another standard feature of all modern tanks) and magnification/TIS and its effects on survivability and tactics of Armor vehicles is a topic all its own.
A tank isn't just a big rifle on tracks with extra armor as BF2 likes to treat it.

Anything, even just magnification, would be a welcome addition for a tank junky like myself :D Keep up the good work!

You haven't tryed PR .6 Open Beta have you? Most of what you've said is already in game. You can try .6 Open Beta now, or you can wait another week or two for the finished release.

X to zoom, thermal sights have been suggested. Next time use the search button :( Every time you don't use the search button, eggman drinks another beer which means .6 will be delayed :(

0.6 SP doesnt work anymore, since we only have 4 base kits and SP needs 7 to work or else it CTD's.

If you are the driver, then X pops smoke, if you are the gunner then X zooms, as I discovered in the Kashan Desert last night, and to my joy. Watching those tracers arcing out was a thing of beauty.

we'll provide a fix / work around for that with release. it will mean that the "pr_sp" method of playing SP is required tho.

We've also (I think) fixed the inconsistencies with the zoom keys, so X will always zoom for armor vehicles and the smoke is actually now a mouse button weapon for the Tank Cmdr.

Thermal imaging systems are impossible because it is hardcoded right? I would kill to see these on my Abrams or AH-64. They would be great for night maps too.

No it's not, quit making false statements without any solid foundation.

Ah....

Awesome info, thanks. I popped the smoke using the "X" while driving and never thought to try it for a different function while gunning.

Thermals would still be cool  It would help get those sneaky little crunchies in the bushes.
