Coax Ammo

Post by Crusader09 »

So far the coaxial machine guns on all the tanks are excellent and accurately done in my opinion, but it's the ammo that has started to bother me. With the new firing rate, all that ammo goes away fast. So I peered around for a bit and read that particularly the M1 tank carries 10,000 rounds of ammunition for its coax gun.

My suggestion is to increase the ammo loadout in the coax for all tanks to 10,000 rounds max.

Excellent mod as far as what I've seen in the Beta. I'll be looking forward to the full release.

how high is the RPM now - surely even at 900rpm, with controlled fire you would still have more than enough ammo. Is this not the case?

It's just the fact like at Kashan Desert. If your tank has survived for a long time without being blown into the sand, you'll have to go back for ammo eventually and a lot of people aren't that willing to drive across the desert who knows how far just to give you ammo and run back to base so the truck isn't spotted and destroyed by the enemy. The tanks are a bit slow so I doubt even the driver would want to travel all the way back when he is currently supporting his buddys right in the cross fire.

Working with controlled fire does help but the ammo clicks empty fast and eventually.

Get a support jeep doing the rounds. Use some team work.

Even on Kashan a tank I've been in has never run dry of coax ammo becuase we:

a) use controlled fire
b) call for a support jeep when we run low
The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.

I was mearly trying to suggest the real life ammunition count for the coax guns. I was not trying to say "Please increase the coax ammo because it runs dry too fast". A simple "Yes, I agree because it'll prove realistic" or a "No, the ammo count is fine as is". I wasn't looking forward receiving a teamwork lecture. I apologize in advance if this is hostile.

It will be checked. No need to appologize though. Your suggestion wasnt hostile by any standards. There're just some members that seem unable to be more helpful.

EDIT: I did a quick search, and although I was able to find fairly detailed specs on the M1 Abrams, I didnt find references regarding the amount of ammo for the coaxial mg. Can you post your references?

Let's see if it'll work.

I hope that does it. It mentions about 3 minutes into the video about the coax count.

Crusader and that video are correct, Ghostrider. Trouble is, no source I have seen tells if those 10,000 rounds are ready in the magazine, or if some of them are stowed. Another 1400-2400 rounds (sources conflict) are carried for the loader's M240.

Increasing the ammunition count to 10000 for all the MBT coaxial MGs would not be realistic. The PKT on the T-62 through 90 series tanks only has 250 ready rounds, with another 7 boxes stowed, which is identical for the Type 86 coaxial MG on the Chinese Type 98/99 MBT. Challenger II carries 4000 rounds for its L94 chain-gun, but no details on ready/stowed.

I didnt reply here because I was posting the thread in the dev forum area :P
For me 10,000 rounds of amunition is similar to 'infinite amo' in BF2.. but it may be possible to make the coax be reloadable etc..

It can be checked out further in the dev area if need be.

I can confirm that the coax does indeed need to be reloaded by the tank's loader. It certainly took a while reading the article below

http://www.fprado.com/armorsite/abrams.htm

Scroll down until you get to the section titled Loader

This should also suggest that the Challenger II tank's coax also has boxes to be loaded by the gunner.

Any other information particularly about the Abrams I think you will find all compiled here.

Glad to be of help.

Thanks a lot. I dont believe there will be time to make those changes for 0.6. This is, very likely, something for a future release.

Well, we do reload our coax at the moment, since we got 2x1000 rounds...

Sorry, off-topic but I have to ask! I haven't tried the 0.6 beta, I don't know if it's there but is it possible to have that sound when the tank's turret turns like in the video? It would be SO cool. If it's realistic ofcourse.

Thats the same info i remember for the challenger II, with other boxes for the coax being stored "where you can" so long as it doesn't interfere with the "water-boiler". :) I forget the size of the std. ammo box for that calibre.

I'll ask at Bovington next time i am down there.
