[Question] mapping question

Is there a way, when mapping, to take a JPEG image from Google Earth, put that as a background, and overlay your map over it?

Or is there a way to make the map in Photoshop, then transport it to the editor?

This mapping thing has me really confuzzled.

I've heard that some people take top-down screenshots from Google Earth, convert the image to greyscale, and size it to 1025x1025 resolution (for a 1024 scale map) and save it as their HeightmapPrimary.RAW. I don't know what formats and stuff to save it in.
