Question about microphone
Is it necessary to have a microphone to play PR? I dont have one and Im not sure if i will get one but I want to play PR and ive heard that you get kicked from the squads and then the game if you dont. I do think its unfair because you can still talk by using the J K or L keys.

No, mics are not required. but its recommended, its hard to type a long msg in the heat of battle.
There are often teamwork or voip squads that require Voip (Voice over IP)
you might get kicked from those squads for not having a mic, but theres always other squads.
I have never seen anyone get kicked from a server for not having a mic or for not using voip.

On this topic - is anyone else having problems with their mic not working with an on-board soundcard?
I had an audigy card on my old motherboard. VOIP worked fine.
Now I have an ABIT mobo with on-board sound. No VOIP. The mic works fine in windows, it just doesn't register in the setup or anything of BF2.

Try decreasing acceleration from directx. Go to: start -> run -> dxdiag -> audio -> move the slider all the way to the leftvanity wrote:On this topic - is anyone else having problems with their mic not working with an on-board soundcard?

I say ditch the expansion packs and use the extra money to buy a good microphone. It's good to be able to understand people instead of going "say again, you're scratchy, mate" every time they say something

Check that your firewall isn't blocking the voip server port, also try adjusting the threshold from bf2 audio settingsvanity wrote:I did that and ran the tests. All were successful. when running bf2voipsetup.exe I still get no feedback, but my voice is loud and clear through my speakers.

Vanity try opening start--->settings---->control panel---->Sounds and audio devices, then click the Voice tab
Make sure that that both recording and play back are assigned to the OBS click apply and you should be good to go

Krekc - I just verified your suggestion. It looks good to go.
The problem is unique to BF2. I can hear my voice through my speakers and in microphone testing. It's the battlefield2 VOIP that's for some reason not picking up my voice.
In searching the interwebs there's more than a handful of people with this problem. VOIP works in other games and in windows but not BF2. I couldn't find a full resolution. It's unfortunate but I'll resign to no longer using VOIP. My new mobo on-board sound out performs my Audigy2 card and I can't justify buying a new sound card just for 1 game's VOIP issues.
So if you see me in game w/o VOIP, I'm not a n00b who can't afford a mic. I've had VOIP working for a long time in BF2 and really enjoyed it. But my old mobo burnt out and after replacing it with a newer, better model, I can no longer use VOIP in game.
/not a n00b
//let me in your VOIP ONLY squads
