Camo nets idea
I know its a retarded idea but then again worth a shot. ok heres my idea you all know how a commander can set downt buildings and build them well cant the set a cammo net down and hide soliders or cars under it. I came across this idea today while playing on kashan desert i was standing on a hill giving sniper cover with the ol trusty m14 when 3 people noticed me well i always have a humvee hidden somewhere near my location for 50 call support or just escape but turns out some one blew it up, then i thought hey wait a min in the military the use camo nets to cover there vehicles in the desert y cant we.
ps: I was in a hurry to type this so ignore the grammar and spelling issues.

yea your right although on some maps like the river one its really good to have consedering its grassy terrain other wise the suits just to make the dude shooting you have an easier jobBlackwaterEddie wrote:I think the main problem with this would be in making the net look more like the terrain and not an object, if you get what i mean.
Take the ghillie for instance, it looks like it doesnt belong in the grass, it has a different look to it if you know what i mean.

The main problem is that this is a game. Objects at a distance don't look the same in real life as they do in game. In real life, there is no pixels, and so camo paint and camo netting helps. In game, at a certain distance, everything is just a clump of pixels of similar colors. Even without LODs, camo nets would probably still stand out.

A simple Camo like wall set up in wooded or jungle or even desert maps could hide all sorts of things behind them and look a the general same color as the surrounding terrain. It wouldn't make it impossible to see just harder.
So building a firebase on Kashan and don't want it obviously visible from afar then stick two camo walls on the two exposed sides and poof you have a "somewhat" concealed firebase.
Pretty handy if you ask me. Though you could still see it from the air which is technically the primary reason for camo netting anything. To make it invisible from the air. So if the top of the firebase was big enough to cover the entire base then you could make the top of the firebase camo to the color of the terrain.
Realistic? Yes. Hard to code? Probably.

Cammo netting is mainly designed to disrupt the shape of an object more then anything, if you park a jeep under netting that looks randomly shaped and nothing like a car it might do its job as long as the person isn't silly enough to park it ontop of a hilltop so the whole thing is silhouetted against the sky.
So even if it does look like something, it dosnt look like a jeep which is what the enemy are looking for. HOWEVER this being a game and all people a) know the landscape pretty well and will know if something is different
b)will learn what cammo netting looks like pretty quick so it will be just as obvious as a jeep
c) will start looking for cammo netting after a few rounds of experiance with it.
Cammo netting is a great idea, but I think unless the netting is random in its shape, size and colour every time, cammo netting is practically useless in a game. Which face it isnt going to happen.
Smaller Cammo netting may work, for snipers to crawl under like a mini tent, but jeep sized or bunker sized I think is almost certainly going to be obsolete after a few rounds.
Perhaps a good way to do it, while not 100% military or realistic would be to take the ground texture itself, and just make a solid sheet of it, it wouldnt look fantastic, but it would do its job game mechanics wise and do the same thing a real cammo net would do.

camo net
How about a camo effect? Just make the object in question disappear from view after a set distance from it? Perhaps the engineer could have the ability to "wrench" the camo net up(model of netting or change skin) so he could tell it was deployed. In the case of vehicles the effect ends when it moves so it has to be redone. I would love to see the commander or engineer able to deploy/build a tank emplacement that can't be seen farther than 10 meters or so. Make it have a long build time (4+min) so you need to have LOTS of guys helping to cut down the time. Tanks could only be seen by the diesel exhaust on engine(stay out of the drivers seat) or the main gun firing(smoke cloud). Of corce the camo net effect should disappear after a set amount of "damage" like a heat round landing close. Just a thought, I would think you can't change the attributes of objects in game "live". Would be nice tho.

People know the maps, youd know a tent was hiding something... a tent isnt gonna stop some squad from blowing up your leet sniper getaway humvee :'(
The firebase already has a netting roof, and the bunker is already a big square thing... Itd be incredibly ueasy to add in, just like the other assets, but honestly, I dont see it really adding too much... itd only SLIGHTLY help for air cover, BUT, the fact is, in a computer game, with generic repeating, similar ground textures, a single object that doesnt match up is gonna stand out like a sore thumb....
Much like now, the camo in PR can be as good as it wants to be, but half the time, you can still just see them anyway regardless of what they are hiding against, etc. [of course not considering a man in tall grass, etc.]
Soldiers out at distances are especially easy to see, so really, your enemy would just have more to see, and then know something was there...
Meh if someone puts it in I dont care, but Im not gonna ask anyone to do it,
Okita
