Commander best practices

Post by blud »

I've been trying out being commander lately in 0.6 (really for the first time since 0.5 which was totally different). So I want to discuss with other people about what the best way to be a commander is. So I'm going to post what I do (so far) to start a discussion about whether this is the best way to do stuff, or if there are better ways.

Warm-up

During the warm-up, obviously apply for commander and accept it. Then watch the squads as they get built up to get an idea of what squads you have to work with. (Annoyingly, the squads you have to work with may change during the first few minutes of the round before things settle.)

If there are 2 or 3 or even 4 solid squads set up with still at least 30 seconds left in the warmup, then use V to tell them who should go where (or possibly ask if anyone specifically wants to do certain things like defend, etc).

Look at the map and think about where you are going to want to put these squads during the attack a couple steps ahead.

The round

- Spawn and get out of the way from all the vehicles.

- go to the commander view and set way points or attack/defend points for each squad

- request the officer kit

- build a command outpost in a decent spot that won't be in the way of anything and is even a bit hidden especially from long range shots. Stand around waiting for someone to wrench the command outpost, using voip or text to tell people you need repairs there.

- check the commander view again to see if you need to give new attack/defend points. Think about your strategy a bit more, plan where you're going to put your bunkers and firebases (if you haven't already)

- once the outpost is made, place a commander truck in a spot where it won't be trapped or crush anyone (lol)

- drive to the first bunker location (if it's safe to do so yet) and place the bunker. place some razor wire around here.

- check the commander window again to make sure everyone's where they should be or if new routes and plans need to be made to adjust to the current situation

- depending on the size of the map, go build another bunker, or build a firebase, or both.

* Ideally you should have an engineer following you around during all this.

- check the commander window again to make sure everyone's where they should be or if new routes and plans need to be made to adjust to the current situation

Now go up on some roof or hill somewhere pretty far away and safe and use your SOFLAMS to look around at stuff and communicate with the SL's about troop and vehicle movements, and wait till the map is over. (Unless of course your team starts getting owned, then you'll have to remake some firebases or bunkers and all that.)
