ehhhh soucy the sooner you accept the fact that your first and 2nd and probaly 3rd map aint going to even be upto standard to release to the public the sooner you will be able to make a good map
I made 2 fun test maps when just fooling around, learning the editor and going though the basic, limited tuts at the time and never planned on releasing thous maps.
Then for my 3rd map I took it more serouicly, some ppl in my clan can probaly remember having lots of fun beta testing it, it wasn't a bad map to be honest was pretty fun but had loads of problems cos of the limited tuts like no low detail maps etc. That map never got released to the public. Made afew more maps like this sniper only map etc for my clan, and a guy from the TN mod team (that no longer exsits) saw my work and got me more into mapping.
then afew months after that started playing PRMM, then afew more months I had the idea for Muttrah and then I did finally release a damn good map.
Duckhunt made afew fun test maps I'm sure before he attempted to make basrah, but it took 3 attempts all starting from scratch to come out with the basrah that was in v0.4 i thinks, then from there it has just been improved and optimized to what it is today.
So really, if you try your hardest to both learn and to make a map you want to release at the same time you have a 95% chance of frailer.
before you decide to go in full swing for making a map, first really get the basics of the editor
can take or leave my advice, its upto you

if you'r new i sugest that you first digest entire editor, make few **** maps just to learn basics and than start on something serious, othervise youll lost will to create big map as soon as you see how tricky it can be.

ok i printed the whole thing over 100 PAGES! 2 ink and cards gone through. And i go lost at spot it says
16. In the Resources bar, expand the Layers folder by clicking on the plus symbol to the left of it, then click on “Layer_1”.
[edit]The Texture Layers
There are several different things in the editor that are referred to as “Layers”. In this case you will see Layer_1 through Layer_6. You should actually think of these more as “Brushes”. Each of these consists of a color texture, which is the main color you see when playing the game, and a detail texture, which is a second high-detail texture that gets blended into the color texture for the area of the terrain that is really close to the player. You’ll see more of how this works in a minute.
You are limited to 6 different combinations, hence the six “Layers”. We will now create the first layer.
17. With Layer_1 selected, look at the TweakerBar and click on the empty field to the right of “ColorTexture”. (It’s the second one down and is circled in the previous screenshot.)
When you do this, it may take a few seconds, but a texture picker window will eventually appear. These are the textures that you can use for the overall color of your map. You can see what they are by their labels, but you can use any texture you like on any part of the map.
18. Click on one of the textures to load it. (I’m going to use “green06):
19. Now click on the empty field next to “DetailTexture” and select any texture you like. This is the detail you will see in the terrain that’s very close to you when playing the game. If you want to see an extreme example of what can be done with DetailTextures, choose “detail_cobble2”.
We also want to set up the material. This determines things like what sound effect is played when running across mud, for instance. It also determines things like how much wheels slip and so on.
20. Click on the field next to “Material”. A drop-down list will appear. If you can’t see the names, hold the cursor over the vertical border on the right side of the TweakerBar until horizontal arrows appear and then drag to the right to expand the window. 21. Choose a material from the drop-down list. (I’m going to choose “Grass”.) 22. Leave all other settings at their defaults

errr,
dude like rhino said it will take lots of expierance to make a good map.
And even if you oly make one map it took okita what, all summer to make his and its still in beta,
so just chill get the tutorials and play around for a bit, wait a while until you have lots of free time to actually commit to making a map.
Besides its not like were in a rush to get a new map, what are like 4 or 5 other maps coming out for .7 ?
any way if you must insets then good luck...

I had this vain moment where I really wanted to see my name pop up in this thread.Eddiereyes909 wrote:And even if you oly make one map it took okita what, all summer to make his and its still in beta,
But really soucy, be prepared to work. I cant tell you how many times I had to totally delete an area, redo something, reload the crashed editor, remake lost work, look up information on how I wanted it to look... etc. The list is endless.
Making my map was(and still is, cuz im nowhere near done) fun, but the most important thing it did was give me an immense amount of respect for every person who has ever made a map that was released in a formal mod/game. At the very least, in the BF2 editor.
That being said, I have been asked many times by people to help me get them started mapping. After the first few, I decided to not try too hard any more because most people stop after they hit a few snags. And the editor is so touchy and so complex its near impossible to solve anything without taking an hour out of your life to help them along.
I hope the map works out well for you and I hope the tuts are relatively enough, and I hope that you dont run into many snags. I say many, because you WILL run into them, as I see you already have.
I hope you get support from the community. Find some people who are interested in the idea and keep them posted. I wouldnt have made it as far as I have(which admittedly isnt that far) without the people who frequented my thread. *shout out to them*
Anyway, good luck Soucy.
And thanks everyone for helping me along on my map.
p.s. Its still in Alpha!

Sorry. Would it be considered flaming if I expressed my believed probability for success of this project?

Wasteland Soldier... I think we have a lot of things in common.
I have been learning how to make maps for the BF engines for months and months now, and I still don't get everything 100% lol
But hey I guess I am pretty awesome, because the FS team thought my 2nd FS map was kickass. (
ops:Was that bragging?
ops: )
lol
