Helo Flight Engine

Post by Soldier-Of-Fortune »

This is not really a bug..more of a game engine issue. but its a big problem so im puttin it in ere :-o the "helo flying engine" for this game is not the best it could be. its very unstable. for example. your flying along and u get a lag spike, next thing u know. ur upside down or veering off irratically. you cant type either cos as soon as u let go of the mouse it starts to turn. if anyone has ever played Armed Assault then u would have noticed that its possible to have a sort of cruise control. allowing you to fly at a sustained hight and speed with little pilot effort, its great for quick typing and map checking, lag is the biggest issue for helo pilots on BF2 PR. are choppers really that unstable in real life??

depends entirely on the chopper.........and whether the pilot can fly with his knees instead of his hands..............and whether the pilot had gone a bit to far the night before.....

There is nothing wrong with the choppers, what you are complaining about is the lag, which is mostly client side.

so true. i usually dont get shot down, its lag that brings me down 90% of the time. anyways after a while i get used to flying with 15fps(which realy sux @$$).

If you lower throttle to around 16% you can get a dead hover, no gain or loss in altitude and no moving, then you can type to your heart's content, hell, I alt-tabbed out and back in, and I was still flying.

most of the choppers are fine, the blackhawk just has a few issues, the roll setting is way to sensitive. i tried to fix this by lowering my sensitivity and raising the yaw factor, but all that does is give me less control during sharp turns.
as for the others

LB- Pitches down a little too often
Merlin- Perfect
Eurocopter- Pitches down a little too much but pretty much perfect
MI2something- fine
Chinese Scout helo- fine
Cobra- Perfect

The MEC Havok, you can park in the sky. You could go eat your dinner and it'd still be there an hour later. As a weapons platform I suppose that makes it perfect though it does not move so well at speed

Lag spikes are nothing to do with heli handling, the pr crew have done well to improve over the simplicity of bf2.

My least favourite heli is either the supercow, the PLA transport beast. It takes 5 minutes to warm up the engines though its not terrible then I guess.
The real pig of the helis is the MEC scout heli, that thing wont turn properly. Eurocopter I think its called.

None of them are erratic like the old BH used to be and I quite liked that anyway for a challenge

Chinese scout pitches up just as much as the lb pitches down.

I assume you've never flown an ArmA helo then. It feels muuuuuuuuuuuuuch better.

I don´t have an issue with the chppers really. they are easier to fly than Flight simulator, but that is to be expected.

The only ones I have problems with is the blackhawk (which behaves like an unstable missile, for me at least) and the MEC scout chopper (although not as bad as the BH), which seems to do its best to make fast contact with the ground.

The last thing that really annoys me is the random heli flipping even on the smoothest of landings.

AMEN BROTHER. What im saying is: you cant let go of the controls of the BF2 helos without losing control. on ArmA if u were goin forward at a steady speed you could let go of the mouse and the keyboard and still maintain controlled flight. in BF2 you instantly seem to do a barrel roll or lose alltitude.
And one more thing about Armed Assault..the game needs a lot of work in terms of infantry and AI control. but the flight engines for both helos and planes is PERFECT. i have not found a single fault on that game..its beautifull. the aircraft even sustain damaged to the tail and rotors like on BF2. i reckon any future games who include helos and jets should just buy permission to use the ArmA flight engine :P

The LB is the only heli I cant let go of the controls with it, tips forward. I often take a drink in the middle of flying lots of the helis

 are you serious? I hate with a passion the way the Cobra handles in Arma even after several patches - even when they broke it completely in one of them!, give me the PR one over it anyday of the week..

I doubt it is that realistic to just let go of the controls and have the helicopter just fly itself.

although thats what im discussing thats not the point. the point is that this unstable helo engine causes disasters when then there is lag or something like that. the pilot loses control if ther is a lag spike and this is a problem that needs sorting out.

??? r u serious? it doesnt matter how experienced the player is. if the server has a lag spike which lasts long enough then the player might crash regardless

I hate to say it, but that is a player problem, we can´t have Helos that fly themselves so that those who get lag spikes and stay in the air. I have had a few lag spikes, but not enough to complain about, yes I hate it when it happens but oh well. And I´m in Spain, so i play with a resonably high ping (higher than most due to lack of spanish servers) on 512KBit connection, and I am not the only one to use our internet. So I can get lag more than others, but it hasn´t become a problem. :-P

When I get a lag spike I just remember what I was doing and act as if I still have control of the chopper. So I do what would keep the chopper in flight or get it to hover. Usually my controls are still submitted to the server/chopper, but I cant see it until the lag spike passes (other than a few random flashes)... If that makes sense.
