[Help!] Creating night maps

I've searched the bfeditor.org and so far only found a post, where it says, that you have to lower some RGB values or something like that, and the map becomes darker. The effect is also supposed to be immediately seen in the editor.

I couldn't find the right values and there isn't any tutorials on it, so since PR has a night map, I was wondering, if the secret to making "Halloween" maps could be shared :p

Night vision maps are so needed!

I remember when we played Joint Operations Typhoon Rising map with a submerged village on a full server and everyone was in patrol boats zooming round at top speed with the gunners and everyone running/sitting in the boats firing when they got the chance at some determined target, with everyone letting rip and the tracers streaming everywhere it was a thrilling lightshow!

Yeah the feeling. Atm there is only one "Bi Ming" and i dont like the Brit vs. Chinese szenario i'd love to have a US Army vs. whatever at night and maybe in a urban map ... :33_love:

It is very easy to change the map to make it darker, just play with the colors of the map:
Terrain sun color
Static sun color
etc...
Dont forget to mess with the fog also

You can do it on the editor

TBH its not really worth investing time and effort into a nightmap unless the shaders can be fixed. ATM any map using the night shaders will kick half the people you try to load it without first loading another map. The BF2 engine's night map capabilities are seriously limited anyways, tbh you're probably best going for day/dawn/sunset :) If you do decide to say 'what the hell' and give it a go anyway I can give you a hand getting things set up.

Well, I was thinking of an urban map (already under construction), with a night/early morning setting. It's dark, but you can still see without NVG's due sunrise/moon or something like that.

not really a night map, night = pitch black, that map is more of a full moon night map where NVGs aint really needed, and why it suits there mod fine, thou its not 1 of there better maps.

It aint hard to get the light and sky settings right, thats the easy bit. The hard bit is not getting the NVGs to not crash the map. no NVGs = no real night map. NVG shader crash = not worth the effort as no one will play it. Also I have noticed night maps are soo much better on paper than they are in practice for players. Every one goes screaming "yes! I want night maps, I love them soo much please make us a night map!!!" and then when they come to play the map, what do the same players say? "oh my god, this map sucks, I cant see a thing! there are too many trees on this map, I'm quiting..." and thats without including the NVG shader CTD.

Yeah, fo real, like there's never this many trees in RL...

hehe, this was my favourite comment in ref. to Bi Ming ;)

btw, the REASON its so 'colourless' is cos a) erm, its at night?! and b) the fog is in a lot closer that the view distance so you can't see the full view distance without the NVG's i.e. you can't gamma hack the whole view distance, thereby solving the age old complaint of gamma hacking. This map was my 'learning map', and being a night map the learning curve was extra steep. But hopefully when you finally play on Op Barracuda and the other map I'm working on, you'll agree that it was worth me going through that period of learning :)

So yeah, stick to dawn/day/dusk :) It ain't worth the headaches ;)

Do I need to generate Lightmaps?
I fooled around with settings and got the map to be dark, but the buildings are still pretty bright.

No, it'll be one of the lighting settings you haven't tweaked yet ;)

you can use the lightmaps to make objects dark but at the same time there is static light colour settings...

Could there be a night version of a map like EJOD or something with an open desert? And is there a way to add those infra-red lasers?
