The Blinding Light!

Post by GRB »

I dont know about you guys, but when I go outside on a sunny day and look at the sun my eyes get watery and I cant look at it for more than a second. It's truly blinding. Looking at the sun is not something that is very fun.

Lets not even get into driving while the sun is low in the sky..Without the visor you're lucky if you don't crash. (exaggeration)

Obviously the point I'm trying to make is that the sun is very bright. In the game the sun looks cool with all its spectacular dynamic little shininess. But lets face it, that effect is totally unrealistic.

I think when a player looks at the sun on clear skied maps that there should be a white-out effect. Maybe instead of that funny looking lense flare, that could never be achieved through the human eye, we could have a whitening of the screen that slowly fades when the player looks away from the sun?

This will have many positive and negative affects on each player in a game where this effect is applied. Especially maps where there's planes and helicopters. ;)

What you guys think?

What I think is that it requires shader programming (and maybe even access to source). And as far as I know, one cant program new shaders for BF2?

The game does feature glow though, so one can always enlarge the sun ;)

mmmm, i want this game to be realistic but lets not over do it. If it can be added i dont mind it being added but i can see it being annoying

the render engine needs to support this feature, i don´t think so that dice has implementet it yet.
the hdr maps for cs:s have this feature it´s verry nice. for example if you step outside from a building your eyes need a moment to adapt,
in that moment you see everything verry bright like in reallife.
could imagine a sniper seeying through the scope in the sun is blind until the match is over

Im talking about when you actually look AT the sun though Blu. I know exactly what you're talking about and you're absolutely correct.

But regaurdless of all that, one thing still remains the same, when you look at the sun, it is too bright too look at for more than a second or so.

As far as the coding goes, I havn't looked into it myself as I usually do before I suggest something so I have no clue as to wether or not changing the effect is even possible. If it requires access to the source, of course not. Otherwise, maybe, just maybe there's a way to do it.

I'll have a look around.

Tom#13, there's a simple and realistic solution to this effect. Don't look at the sun! For those careless enough to not be aware of their surroundings, I feel that the sun should be one of the MANY things that can become an obstacle.

Now of course we dont want it to be annoying. So if this was possible, I think it should be applied so that the effect only happens when you look almost directly at the sun.

This wouldn't be as much of a problem for the ground aspect of the game as it would for the aircraft. ;)

copy (or simulate) the flash bang effect, to a lesser degree, so that that effect happens every time you do what would currently make the sun sprite appear larger?

Exactly!

So thou shall be punished for doing it. Those who gaze at the bringer of light shall lose thier vision!

Seriously though, I think it would be a very cool effect to kind of screw up pilots who fly carelessly.

Its not very important to gameplay, but it would make Project Reality VERY unique..

it just takes a quick glance on a bright day to blind you for about 1/2 a second, and then you have that wierd negative of the sun stuck in your retina for about 5 minutes.
