Using torrent to fix corrupted download

People have been mentioning that they have fixed corrupted downloads using bit torrent programs. Could someone tell me how you go about this?

alright m8, Im no sure about torrent files,
Did you try the direct download links?
as when i tryed it only one was corrupted :/

You start the torrent, stop it and swap over a copy of your corrupted direct download

The name obviously must match including the (hidden) extension

Dont start the torrent, right click and hash check it

Depending on the torrent program you may be able to skip all those steps and simply tell the torrent program to download to the exact same location and file as your current downloaded copy. It should see that the file already exists there and attempt to check it too see how much it has left to download (or if it has to redownload a chunk of the file in the case of a damaged download).
