He is indeed holding his mic, close to his mouth (due to downdraft of chinhook), while he talks on his PRR (Personal Role Radio)

So yeah the poll, needs a "correct" answer

working up the curage to get in, knowing that his life is about to end, because the :

A) the pilot will get shot down as soon as he lifts off
B) he will break both his legs jumping 20 feet because polit dose not know how to land
C) the aircraft will "flop upside down" during take off, killing all occupants.

but that is my guess.

He's smoking his dooby to the roach. Because of the downdraft of the chinhook he can take a much bigger toke, inhale more, and get more stoned than a common thief who's just been caught red-handed in Taliban country.

The real answer is that whoever put this into the login screen screwed up the gamma, making it difficult to even tell whether the man in the foreground is facing the camera or not, let alone what he's doing.

The original photo is on Ian Chapman's webpage (Linkage), and it's just a better photo, because you can see that he's holding a radio, not biting his nails or checking his breath.

If I didn't know that, I'd have chosen the nail-biting option.
