PR quick guide

Post by space »

I think that PR needs somekind of quick guide. When you first start out, its a very steep learning curve.
If you read the 36 page manual before you play PR ( how many people read the manual for anything ), then alot of the information will make no sense. If you play and ask simple questions like why cant I get in this APC, then most people scream " read the manual "
We all know the simple questions that most people have when they start out and Ive seen lots of first timers get flamed for asking simple questions, get stranded at base, say this sucks, and probably delete PR or worst case senario, tk aload of guys at base as theyll never play it again.
For me personally I almost gave up ( partly due to frequent CTD's which were my fault ) but I stayed with it and then went on to read the manual once I was hooked. The new tips on the load screen are a step in the right direction, but you only get a couple per map.
For all the suggestions people have about whats needed in PR, I think that the main one is more players and more full servers, and making the first few games a bit easier may help with this.

Just check the guide link above.
Thanks for that - before I posted I looked around the realitymod site and searched the forums to make sure I wasnt missing a quick guide. tbh I wouldnt have looked in the FAQ for something like a quick guide, and also the FAQ is still quite long with quite alot of info which isnt needed in a quick guide. Like it or not people will see the size of the manual and not bother. If there was an easy to find quick quide with say 10 - 20 tips it may help at little. I think its easy to forget how to was when you started playing PR.

Newbie guide is pretty much what I was thinking off, except that it should explain importance of squads in it. I think it should be much easier to find or maybe in the intro to the full guide.
I would have loved to have read that when I started out, and judging by the questions which are asked almost every round, Im not the only one.

Spearhead is also working on a PR cheat-sheet. Basically a one or two pages long quick guide with the basic important stuff.

It might be an idea to have a few lines about system setup as well as this seems to be the other major problem for new players.

e.g.

Close background programs/auto updaters
Allow pb and bf2 through firewall
Try game on lower settings
Manually update pb and all system drivers
Run as admin/xp compatability mode under vista ( for bf2 and PR )
Check youve got a low ping

Again some of these would have saved me many many hours of misery!

imho a quick guide should stick to gameplay and leave the tech issues out. lowering your settings and updating drivers etc. has nothing to do with PR in particular but is IT basics man.

I know what you mean , but due to the game being so squad orientated, the tech issues can really affect the gameplay - the number of times the sq leader or tank gunner has been disconnected at just the wrong time! :( ( and the ticket loss this causes )

Due to the game being 0.7 and a mod, the tech issues seem to cause many people many problems. 5 tips on the tech side will not be hard to read and it will stop people being frustrated with the game when they start out, which will mean more players. They could search the forums if they have a problem, but I find there is TOO much information and conflicting advice on the tech issues.
