Battle Confusion

Post by lacier »

i just recently downloaded PR and i think its great, its exactly what ive been looking for for so long. its just sooo confusing!!!

in large matches nearing 60 players i never understand whats going on. i join squads just like it recommends but thats where the confusion starts. usually the squads i join aimlessly wander around the edges of the map and then stop and wait for like 10 mins, and then back track. half the time the squads dont even go towards a flag we are supposed to capture or defend, im so confused. is it just lousy squads that i join or is there some point to what they are doing??

i ask questions in game using squad chat but nobody responds. ill ask when we are sitting around not doing anything in some completly remote area of the map. i usually ask, "what are we doing? what is our objective?" but nobody answers. since im still new to this game i follow the squad blindly like a sheep. in fact, i feel like the other squad members do the same thing sometimes.

i get so frustrated, PR is supposed to be fun! Usually my squad will wander and stop in the middle of nowhere and WAIT for up to 10 mins before deciding to go back to the main base. And its so frustrating because we never accomplish anything, we just wander the entire game, which sometimes seems to last around an hour. ive tried many other squads but most of them seem to do the same thing.
ive been in a couple squads that were great, they were quick and decisive. move to this location, attack this postion, defend, flank the base, attack and so on.

is there something i dont understand? is there something i just dont see?? please help.
what do you guys do? what are common tactics that a squad SHOULD/USUALLY do?

It depends a lot on the guys you are with and the commander of your team. Many of us prefer to use Team Speak over VOIP, some times we don't listen to VOIP. Join squads with names like "teamwork, VOIP, or Assault", those are usually indications that the squad wants to work together. Stay away from "Helicoptor," or "Armor" until you get some more experience. When pubing, I'll jump from squad to squad asking if anyone is on VOIP, if not I join a different squad or make my own. If you join a squad and don't see a "move to," or "attack" marker on the map chances are they are just running around aimlessly.

Sometimes a good squad will be tasked by the commander to do something, in your case they might have been getting ready to attack a CP and had to wait until another one got cap'd, but then the attack failed they had to fall back to defend another CP. Or maybe they were just running around the map goofing off.

Stick with it, you'll love it (and you'll learn which servers to seek out for good teamplay), and welcome to the game!

Dont use chat, get a microphone to speak to your squad. They are really cheap, and you need it to effectivly communicate.

I always join squads that say VOIP, normally they speak english, and most people are keen to do the objectives that I've played with. Problems can occur when the squad leader doesn't have a clue what to do, and in this case I normally ask the rest of the squad how they feel about starting a new squad with me leading. Never join a squad that has a squad leader who doesn't use a mic, it's frustrating and ruins the fun.
I always find good squad to play with on Thors Brigade, iGi, 10th Mountain and a few other servers.

It's one of the great things about PR, teamwork is essential, but I know what you mean it can be frutrating when you dont have a clue what is going on.

yeah. and it's annoying having to kick ppl from the squad all the time. maybe we've identified the reason why the manual obviously isn't read mostly: illiteracy :D

You have no clue... I started this VOIP squad and all five people that joined didn't have a mic... the pub playerbase in general is just pretty damn frustrating. Many of them have extreme difficulty following orders/instructions, have little to no discipline/patience. Tell your squad we're defending, and 5 minutes of no activity most of them start straying too far from the perimeter trying to hunt hostiles. If I place a rally point at a moderate distance from my target destination, people start demanding you place it closer, where usually it ends up being found by the enemy. Bah... I could go on about how I've just come to hate pubbing with random players now.

To the OP, I feel your pain, even having been playing PR for almost 3 years now.

-Sounds like you've had some bad luck with the squads you join, must be some freak coincidence. To find a good squad here's what you do:

Squad name: If the squad name is customized(VOIP/TEAMWORK/Etc.) there is an increased chance of there being someone with a functional brain in it. A description of the squad's functionality is also usually found in the squad name, such as: INF(Infantry), ARMOR, AIR, HELO, etc. ENG usually refers to English, as in english VOIP. Same goes for GER(Germany) and a few other language abbreviations. I lead engineer squads once in a while, for that I spell it out(ENGINEERS) so as not to confuse it with ENG(English).

Squad composition: Before joining a squad you should look at who is playing and what kits they have. If you see lots of special kits and no medic chances are they're not playing as a squad. If the Squad Leader(SL) does not have the Officer kit then chances drop even more. For infantry squads the usual composition is 1/2 riflmen, 1 medic, 1 L-AT/H-AT, 1 AR. If you see squads like that with the SL having the Officer's kit then they're probably teamwork focused. The more exotic the selection of kits, the smaller the chance of teamwork.

Map indications: Look around on the map to spot which squads have their rally points placed. Any teamwork orientated squad has a rally down almost 100% of the time. You can also click on the soldiers around various SLs to see if they're in the same squad(Need the Squad roster open), if they're sticking together that's another good sign. Lastly, look where the squad is on the map. If they're in an inconsequential part of the map then they might have little care for the progress of the game and not interested in cooperation.

-I would ask you to play as medic once in a while and defend flags. These are some of the most annoying things people do in PR, they either avoid the medic kit as the plague(Though I don't know why, I like playing medic) and think nothing about defending recently captured flags, much to the detriment of the ability for their team to win.

-If you've got any questions or need any help just send me a PM.

Just because you name the squad VOIP does not mean MIC...name it MICS....!.lol very simple...VOIP just mean u can HEAR if people are talking..

sometimes when i play i don't even have a mic with me..but can accomplish a hell of a lot more than hearing 5 guys talking over eachother

to the OP....what servers are u playing on.?

I've a mic, but BF2 doesn't detect it all too well. Hopefully, my new laptop has better luck with it. Can't tell you how many times I could've saved precious seconds with a mic compared to typing it out.

qft. it's annoying. but what can one do.

regarding the squad problem: if a server has a teamspeak, join it. ppl in teamspeak tend to communicate lots and if you find nice ppl they'll even give you an introduction on what to do and what not to do.

Yeah, hunt round for a better server. I used to really enjoy Thors Brigade, but I don't play there anymore.

There are too many servers where people will just join a squad so that they can get the crewman kit and go off in a tank and rack up kills. Not much that can be done, I guess I should have just kicked those guys from the squad. But I don't like being mean.

I just want to know who Mike Czech is and why everyone thinks he is in my squad.
And as the windshield melts
My tears evaporate
Leaving only charcoal to defend.
Finally I understand the feelings of the few.

Yeah, quite a few people seem to bee looking for him. They join your squad, shout for him and leave when they don't get a reply. What's with that?
