Let's stop and ask som1....

All the qualified drivers here know that its hard to drive and not miss that left/right turn or whatever if its not that easy to see. Aways best to have a navigator or a GPS with a sexy voice (but that's another story...:wink :)

So whenever I'm in a vehicle with my squad I try to get in the seat next to the driver so that I'm in a good position to get my map out and direct him, rather than the driver getting his map out and driving over a mine/cliff.

I've never seen any1 else do this, so I encourage everyone to do it.

e.g. Bi Ming, We wanted to get to communications from chinese main, but driver didn't know the roads. So I quickly and easily directed him. "the left is coming up in about 100m, then take the dirt road on the right..." etc etc.

Allowed us to get to communications quickly and scare the living **** out of the british coming through the forest.

The people I usually play with know the maps very good, so I don't really have to (or I'm driving myself).

But for new guys it's a good idea.

Well, even if you know the maps, there might be other circumstances that would require you to change your route, for example if someone spots an APC you should know where exactly it is. As SL youll also need to check if there could possibly be enemys waiting for you.
Ive driven over alot of mines, only because i had my map out, and tried to figure out the wisest way to proceed.

Usually this only happens when i play with my clanmates. We are always on teamspeak together. Me being the SL most of the time would direct the driver. If all communications go well within the team i should be the one most aware of the situation next to the commander.
And indeed, even if you know the map changes in your route may occur due to mines, blown bridges or hostile armor/known ambushes.

A whole other thing is of course when you play with insurgents/militia. Reigning chaos over the enemy team is best done when the driver is given full freedom, just given information about danger and the target. Long live shoot 'n dash tactics.

in my opinion the SL should usually drive on a public such as to be able to quickly stop and set an emergency rally at a suitable pos etc.

but i also do what you propose, especially when using TOW HMMWs

I pretty much know all the roads, and I have my map set to 100% transparent. reason for this is so that I can see where the rest of the team is without blocking off my view - very handy when flying the heli - in fact when I fly, I have it open constantly.

In any case, it keeps the squad talking. Driver is doing his thing, gunner is doing his thing.

Passengers are kinda passive, the only alternative I can see is a sing-along...which would obviously result in a server crash.

I would never do that, If you have a TOW and 2 50 cal hummers have the SL in the middle TOW diving. Gives the most important guy in teh squad alive from RPG's and mines.

If you need to look at the map, you probably shouldn't be driving.
