British carrier map

Post by Symplify »

(Initial note: Search turned up no relevant material)

Alright, so in vanilla and now in PR there are maps where a US marine expeditionary force is deployed from a carrier to take the mainland. I was wondering if there was any chance we could see a similar-themed map, except with the British on one of their carriers (I don't know which kind would be relevant) with an MEU of their own.

I know this would be a hell of an undertaking for modelers, but it would be cool to see in the 1.0 version, in my opinion.

HMS Ocean!!

But since the US carrier hasn't been redone yet AFAIK, we'd have to use the current carrier as a placeholder.
Would be great however just for a change of pace.

First off Brits don't use MEU's...

Secondly the UK Marines operate from Amphibious Assualt Warships, so model either the HMS Ocean as Rudd suggested or HMS Albion or Bulwhark. Then it's game on :D

Yeah man!

I'm all for this idea and fully understand what a task it would be. I know how to model stuff, I'm learning to wrap and find the tut's on here very informative. I would however, rather see the Chinese carrier next on the ship building priority list (sorry chaps) so we can have some carrier vs carrier action *ahemm PRwake2 ahemmm* sorry, I have a bad cough.

If I was to take the task of modeling a carrier, we'd have to wait a year or so but if nobody else is already or won't, I will.

Yea,it'd be tight to have the Brit carriers in PR.

-Also,why isn't the carrier from BF2:SF used for U.S. as it's more realistic. You can access the engine room, mess hall and etc.

What about the new Largs and Mounts bays? They are the new support vessels run by the RFA.

And yes it would be cool, It would give a huge amount of map ideas for the British Forces.

I think there will be a british carrier based map in the future. ;)

only problem is no APC, imagine the warrior would just sink to the bottom.

Atm the brits lack the vehicles to pull it off. Something like the viking and some lighter choppers like the lynx or the sea king rather than the merlin would probably be needed to do it effectively...

Lynx was in production. And the Merlin could be a placeholder for something else.

And the APC issue?

Plus merlins are too slow and cumbersome. Imagine Jabal with them, they'd get nailed by HAT and APCs, troops can get stuck in the back etc. It would be an inadequate placeholder imo.

(What variant was the Lynx btw, light lift or anti tank?)

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see some other factions get some carrier action, just don't think any have it in them just at the moment.

To an earlier post: Why would the Chinese get a carrier? Last I checked they were either only in late research/prototype, or were only just starting to make em.

The Lynx had a pretty complete model sometime around .5, but it seems that is was tossed out and never finished. If we could get a light helo and some boats, it could work, as long as someone labored over the carrier. (Maybe Rhino could do it, instead of cranes :P )

Well,those are OPK's cranes,that he's just re-skinning,as far as I know.

But,I'm surprised that the U.K. doesn't have it's own AAV yet...

HMS Ocean is an assault ship, not a carrier, thou to pull off a good British amphibious assault map you would probably want both a assault ship and a carrier :p

the big problem here is, to crate a carrier or a assault ship, it would take I would think over 2 months to model, anouther 2 to 3 months to skin, which ehhh, in realistic terms, 5 months or so of solid work? I know of a guy whos been working over a year at trying to make that huge US carrier, thou he aint been working on it solidly, the model aint 100% and it aint even started with the texturing.

maybe when PR gets into its late stages, but not any time soon.

We can't do the Viking since the engine won't do articulated vehicles. Also, the HMS Ocean does not have a well-deck from which to launch them, the other assault ship class (whose name escapes me) does. RAF Chinook crews are trained to operate and have operated from RN ships in support of the Commando Brigade. I don't see why the Merlin crews would be any different.

Well, I just love the ocean, beautiful ship

If you're goin to assualt a beach, you'll want the ocean more than the ark royal :D afaik we dont keep large complements of marines on board our carriers, just the assualt ships.

I thought that merlins were stationed on ships like ocean anyway, along with the sea kings and lynx, i remember from the news of that drug bust in the carribbean anyway.
