[Question] waterplane?
On my map the lowest part is being used as a storage mine so the sealevel is set to a minus number. I want to have a river so it appears that I need to use a waterplane. There are already PR waterplanes from other maps, but Im not sure how they work and theres not much info on the forums.
Can I just create my river with the level tool and then "tile" one of the square PR waterplanes where I want my river ( area around river will be higher ) ?
If this is possible then I dont understand why people have created custom waterplanes that fit their river/terrain exactly.

i dont quite know how you imagine creating a river with the "level tool"...spacemanc wrote:On my map the lowest part is being used as a storage mine so the sealevel is set to a minus number. there are two possibilities of creating water:
1. water sealevel (levelsettings) : this is the height of the water which "fills" the complete level .
2. waterplanes: its kind of a static which has a watertexture and waterphysics so you can place it wherever you want(leveleditor) in your map even up in the air but that will look weird of course... that explains why people create their waterplanes for their custom maps...
eg quinling: imagine making the river with 30 small planes...so rhino created a very long waterplane to make it simple
so if you want to have different water heights in your map , use the seawaterlevel for the lowest level and create all other waterfields with waterplanes or otherwise the seawater will just overflow your low waterplanes...
i hope that explains

Re: [Question] waterplane?
I always search the forums first, but look up waterplanes, and youll see theres very little info apart from one tut on how to create custom waterplane - nothing on using the stock waterplanes.[R-DEV]Rhino wrote:load qinling or anouther map into the editor and look how its done on there... also searching the editor forums dosen't hurt, the last question you PMed me you could have found the awanser for on the editor forums as well.
Same with the "last" and only question I PMed you. Nothing on the forums using serveral search terms and at least 3 hours of searching - your 20 second reply was extremely useful - thanks again!
marcoelnk - the platform tool is very useful. It levels the selected area to a height of your choosing. Right click on a location on the grid to set the height ( or enter it manually in the editor window ) and then the tool will level everything to that height. I find it particually useful for manipulating single vertices with the smallest brush size, as its movement is not as "aggressive" as the other tools.
EDIT thanks for the tip on loading other maps Rhino - I didnt think it could be done for some reason withoug doing all the map audit stuff - if only Id known!!!

Re: [Question] waterplane?
I search that forum for any problems as well as several others - most of the time I can find the answer quite easily, but sometimes theres nothing. Even major topics such as statics, water and roads have only a bit of info.marcoelnk wrote:bfeditor.org/forums
I also find that theres very little info ( in fact almost no info ) on 4km maps ( hence my question to Rhino )
It has been very hard work getting to grips with the editor, but it does get easier. I still learn loads of stuff everyday, but theres so much more stuff Ill have to learn to finish my map that its quite daunting.

@ spacemanc : the only info (afaik) for 4km maps is this : How To Make A Scale 4 Map - Official BF Editor Forums
and that topic is the first sticky topic in the terrain editor section...

All that tells you is one line of code to get the lods to stich correctly - not alot of info! Most of the things Ive worked out myself now, but it was very hard.marcoelnk wrote:...

your q you pmed me before, took a 2sec search, even thou the topic was posted by me
Overgrowth Not Going To The Edge Of The Map... - Official BF Editor Forums
and for your other question, anouther 2sec search, this may help:
Water - Official BF Editor Forums
the BFeditor.org search function is the best forum search I know of, it finds EVERYTHING you want just put in the right searches. Way better than the search on the PR forums
just have a look thought some of the links it gives you, it helps

what is there more to know about 4 km maps? only issue i solved was that you have to set the combatzone to the edge of the map by hand or your gonna die once you reach a certain distance to the mapedge...spacemanc wrote:All that tells you is one line of code to get the lods to stich correctly - not alot of info! The questions on the water was more about why people make custom waterplanes - I dont fancy doing that, so I wanted to check before I gouged a big channel through my map!
marco your right, 4km is the same, just bigger - but when I started out I was tring to find info and there was none, some people said a 2048 scale 2 was a better option, so I was pretty lost. Most of my problems were just basic noob mapping problems, but Im getting there now though and the map looks better everyday!

Re: [Question] waterplane?
Yes theres some way of doing it, but I imagine that it makes the loading time and file size larger as all the maps will be twice as big - on the upside, you get much more control over the terrain and more detail ( which I would love for when Im building roads! )marcoelnk wrote:does your editor support 2042 size????the highest for me is 1024
Basically I just saw that quling and kashan were 1024 sacle 4 so there must be a reason for that!
PS - my new river is looking sweet!

Re: [Question] waterplane?
The only real reason is cos a default, 128 or w/e waterplane dose not fit the spot very well. Like if I used default waterplanes for the rice fileds around the farm on OGT they would stick out into the open and just wouldn't work. I had to make custom waterplanes that fitted the area perfectly to make it work.spacemanc wrote:The questions on the water was more about why people make custom waterplanes - I dont fancy doing that, so I wanted to check before I gouged a big channel through my map!

Re: [Question] waterplane?
Ah OK well Ive stiched together aload of 128 waterplanes now and luckily my terrain can take it ( after some minor adjustments ) There are some places where it flickers through at a distance - will this be sorted on the final render, or do I have to raise the height a little more in these places?
Also slightly off topic ( well totally ) did you guys set yourself a static count limit for the 4km maps? I dont understand how the computer handles graphics. Does it load the static list at the game start and then renders them when theyre coming into view, or does it kind of build the whole map at the game start? Basically whats more important - number of different statics, or total number of statics on map ( presuming there evenly spread and not all together ) ? Hope you understand what I mean by that!

Re: [Question] waterplane?
i think you asked that several times now... you can place as many statics as you want (beside destroyable ones). whn loading the map bf2 loads the whole map.but there are certain viewdistances for certain objects (just like for under/overgrowth) thats why some statics might appear only when you get nearer but normally you always them but in distance you dont see them with all theri details but with a simple texture and stuff...
is this a quiestion because of bare interest or what should it help you?
concerning waterplanes again : when doubleklicking an object you can see its coordinates and can manually adjust them. so if you want to stop the flickerring and want the planes to align perfet just enter the same y-coordinate for all of them (height) and the work on the x and z coordinates so that everything fits well.
