Freeze with stuttering sound
PR freezes for me sometimes, with the screen locking in place and the sound stuttering - and to get out of it I have to manually reboot (alt-tab and alt+ctrl+delete do nothing). Does anyone else ever get this? I used to get it once a week at most, but today it happened 3 times all within the space of 3 or 4 hours. Is there anything I can do to prevent this?

Re: Freeze with stuttering sound
Post your settings and PC specs.
I got freeze / soundloop with the old 7900GT. Got a 8800GTS 512 G92 = no freeze.

Re: Freeze with stuttering sound
I get a freeze, then a blackout sometimes with just the trees showing, then it comes back.
Sometimes it seems like VIOP causes lag for me and I do get the freeze up with stuttering that requires a manual reboot.
I have a dirty 128mg GPU and only 1G of RAM.
I has happened more often last week and then I cleaned the GPU as best I could it stopped for the most part.
I run on all low settings.

And as the windshield melts
My tears evaporate
Leaving only charcoal to defend.
Finally I understand the feelings of the few.

Re: Freeze with stuttering sound
Hmm, I thought I was the only one getting this. I've a HP dv9000 laptop, can run PR and BF2 fine at Medium, yet at times, it just freezes, nothing I do can budge the laptop, and the looping noise just keeps going. I have to manually shut down the laptop. I check the fans and see it's rather hot.
Conclusion: overheat. Never happens with vBF2, as it's not as complex as PR.

Re: Freeze with stuttering sound
I get freezes where everything slowes down to a snail pace. Its like suffering from UBER lag but my ping is abolutly fine. I can talk/hear people on TS and yet for 2-3 mins PR is unplayable as everything it stuttering about, I will see some one walking twoards me then bag he is behind me. Then everything will be fine for 5-10 mins before it starts again. Anyone have any ideas?

If any of you have anything overclocked then it can cause BF2/PR to freeze up, because of Punkbuster.

Re: Freeze with stuttering sound
I have a suspicion this is related to overheating GPU cards. I was experiencing it as the temperature rose this summer until I fitted a Zalman VF700-CU cooler to my x1950pro GPU (required a couple of extra heatsinks, one with a bit cut off, for the VRM chips)and lowered the temps 20c. I think I've had one lockup since, but not the annoying ones from before.

So I´ve heard..but non OC systems maybe also got the freeze/loop?[R-DEV]Cheeseman wrote:If any of you have anything overclocked then it can cause BF2/PR to freeze up, because of Punkbuster.

Ive got mega cooling in my system lots of airflow 7 case fans not including my ram cooling fans and my cpu never gets over heated. Just wondering if anyone else is running the creative xifi gamer sound card, talked to one person who has this sound card and started having the same problems right out of the blue with no other know issues.

Have you tried manually updating your OpenAl file?

Re: Freeze with stuttering sound
I have this problem too, but only when i run the airborne mini-mod and training maps.
I have:
AMD X2 Dual core, with Gigabyte 3d Rocket cooler.
2gb of RAM
BFG 7900GT OC, overclocked out of the box, anyone know if this is causing a problem?
A hell of a lot of cooling fans.
I tried uninstalling BF2 completely, re-patching reinstalling PR, it seems to be less frequent now, but still really irritating.

System/ Temperature at full usingCharity Case wrote:Have you tried manually updating your OpenAl file?
CPU: AMD XP 3500+ (Venice)/ 42° - 50° Celsuis
Mainb.: Asus A8N SLI Premium/ 36° - 45° Celsius
Display:Gainward 8800 GTS 512MB/ 72° - 78° Celsius
RAM: 2 GB Corsair Value
Sound: X-FI Extreme Gamer/ 42° - 45° Celsius ( Manuell installed Sensor on Card and 80mm Fan for Cooling System direct at the Slot)
I have also a X-FI Extreme Gamer, with the latest OpenAI Driver and getting the same Lags/Crashes ( 1 - 4 per 1 1/2 hour).
The Most time it happen on Maps like Quinling and Kashan 64 or Qwai 64 or on a full 64 Slot Server on every Map, if somebody talking in VOIP, a JET/ Tank having a Flyby and if im in a Gunfight with Enemy and that all at the same Time.
It will happen not so many Times as i changed the Settings/ Soundoptions from Hardware and High Quality to X-FI and Extreme Quality.
The Setting in X-FI Command Center on Standard, deactivating SVM.
No Problems like the explained in Vanilla or other Games. But in FOH2 it will happen.

You have no space left on your hard drive, can you even defrag it.?
I thought it needed 12% space to defrag.

Re: Freeze with stuttering sound
This freezing issue has been problem for PR quite a while, and for Forgotten Hope aswell. As far as I know no-one has found specific reason why it's there, and why some have it and others don't. None of the previously mentioned fixes haven't solve it for me, and because the freezing issue has been reported here over and over again I think there is still lot of people having this problem.
So far the freezing has appeared for me besides the looping sound as crashes to desktop, blue screen of death or wierd graphical glitches. There has been errors with afd.sys file while having BSOD, which refers something network layer related; on the other hand graphical glitches would point to GPU driver problem. Some have mentioned Punkbuster because it has had some problematic aggressive memory scan features.
So at the moment I'm just waiting someone will come and explain where it all comes from and tell how to fix it, or hopefully someday there will be some update and it will just disappear.

That looks like GPU overheat.

Yes that could be the case. GPU fan was set today at full 100 % and there wasn't any freezing. Game was still very laggy but supposedly that came from server end.
Edit: Yep, problem solved: GPU was just running too hot - damn 8800's lame fan control.
Edit 2: No it can't be just overheat. I raised fan levels considerably and temperature is around 56 - 60 C at heavy loads and still get freezing. None of those graphical glitches anymore but there's something else in this.
Edit 3: Ok, seems it was both overheat in GPU and too low voltage at motherboard because of OC. No freezing so far, lets see how it goes this time...
