Hundreds of hours PRSP, but never played anything online. Want to start

Post by Pvt_Parts »

(list of questions below)

While I have played hundreds of hours of PRSP 0.5, dozens of PRSP 0.6, and a handfull of PRSP 0.756, I have never played online. In fact, I've never played anything online. I did once try to play PR online, but was repeatedly kicked while in the squad selection screen. I don't know if I was taking too long to select a squad, or if it was a supporting member kick.

I've played BF2 mods ("Mercs", "Hard Justice", AIX, etc) and various oldschool RTS and FPS games on a LAN with my sister (and a couple times with my sister and her boyfriend), but I was usually hosting, so I've never experienced the lag/delay of a client.

I've never wanted to play anything online after seeing videos of the obnoxious idiots online. However, it seems that the PR community is much, much better than other games/mods, so I wanted to try to play online.

I just reinstalled BF2/PR after several months, so I am a little rusty, but I used to be very good against bots. Usually its you alone against an enemy squad, since a) bots don't want to listen to you, b) your team always seems to use the least teamwork, c) the bots seem to always target the player more than the bots. I've tried to create pseudo-teamwork with the bots (even modding the ai and object files), but its like trying to get the average house cat to willingly go into a bath.
  • Which servers would be best to start with?
  • I know once joined, you ask the SL what he wants you to spawn as, and where to spawn. However, whats the protocol for selecting a squad?
  • My DSL is retarded at times. What is the worst ping I should connect with for infantry only?
I did not read the manual on the HD, but read the online manual on the site. Other than a few minor changes from 0.6, nothing seemed new. I'll later browse the manual file (on the hard drive) to see if there is anything there that is not online.

About my play styles:
I tend to use my sights and fire at 1-3 sec intervals (unless its vCQB, then its rapid tapping from the hip). I enjoy playing a medic in most mods, but its hard in PRSP (limited revives). As AT/LAT, Its rewarding to take out light armor that is harassing your team/squad. When things get tough, I spawn Autorifleman and using 1 sec bursts, I enjoy easily wiping out squads of enemy "dots" (I often engage while they are still dots), but wish they would be effected by suppression too. I've always wanted to play engineer, but the jittery bot drivers make it impossible. I used to be decent with UGL and grenades, but have become lousy again. When in mods where bots will enter vehicles, I sometimes spend all round ferrying them back and forth. While I can fly in sims like Falcon 4, Search and Rescue, MSFS, etc, I can not fly in PRSP (it doesn't help that my joystick requires 7% deadzone). I have a mic. ;) I also watched the Foolsroad 0.7 teamplay video, the PR 0.5 Squad training videos and a number of 0.5 teamplay videos. I want to be a part of that teamplay.

I'd probably use my current ID, DJ_or_Doc... Which would be fitting if asked to play medic. :)

For a starting server I recommned:

Tactics&Teamwork,.:iG:.,10Mountain,Thors Brigade or Tactical Gamer. There are lots of other servers but these I the ones I play on and enjoy most.

Don't worry about your DSL being retarded.Mine is worst. My ping jumps from 28 up to 350 and stays there for a good while before coming down to 150 :(

Awesome a VIRGIN! :D

Nah but come to Tactical Gamer or Tactics & Teamwork when I am online, would be glad to help you get started, also I like to chat and stuff like that.
Yes in-game ID is Sir.SSaul. :P

Hell if you want Private Message me if you are interrested.

Online gameplay sure beats singleplayer by far if you have the right server to play on and some decent players that are fun to chat with.

the battlearena is very nice spot to start because its one map that repeats constantly, and its an all time favorite. If you can get used to not shooting at everything that moves (because there are civilians playing there) then you will do fine on all other maps. You would need to familiarize yourself with bomb runs since its a two man job or more, but if you are going infantry then do this:

Once you pick your server, be sure to choose a squad. VOIP is recomended so i hope you have a mic, since in some squads its required.
There are certain squads that are designed for special roles, like armor or transport, or jihad. If you feel up to one of those go ahead and join, but be ready to follow orders.

If you just want a basic infantry squad join anything thats default labeled (alpha, bravo, delta, etc)

When you do join and you have already spawned dont worry about getting a kit that the squad needs. If the squad leader really needs something he will let you know. Just ask what is going on and what the plan is, then meet up with ur squad.

Hopefully everything will just fall into place after that, dont be afraid to take risks but dont be stupid either. Nobody likes a wasted vehicle that strands a whole squad back in main base, and dont get in an APC without a gunner and such.

Im sure if you ask your squad will help, if they dont and they act like noobs, simply leave squad and join another.

But dont be discouraged if you get kicked from a squad, sometimes a team is in a rush to do something important and they have no time to explain to a newcomer, its happened to me before.

Bunkers are essential, please try to use your shovel if you have one to build a bunker or firebase if instructed to, they will help you in the end.

Oh and also, you didnt mention anythign abotu sniping. THere is MAJOR deviation, you have to hold the scope still for 3-4 full seconds and then press trigger. If you simply move it an inch the bullet will hit nowhere near where ur pointing at. ITs stupid, and retarted and makes no sense, but its the DEVs way of implemeting range and all that ****, obviously painfully wrong. But just warning you ahead of time. ALso all other guns have deviation i think you noticed, so be ready to waste clips of ammo.

God thats long, hope this helps, if you have any other questions, just ask.

Texas Team Players is definatly one you should check out. it's one of my personal favs. Unfortunatly it doesn't have a lot of people on until around 9-10pm EST (Well at least from my experiance).

At least in PRSP, you can move the scope REALLY SLOW to track a target that is moving slighly in the distance and still keep accuracy. I don't know about PR though. I don't really like using a sniper rifle to snipe anyway. A scoped assault rifle with 1-4 sec between shots works nicely in PRSP and other games. The times I wanted to specifically "snipe" in PRSP, I chose DM.

I realise and accept that I would asked to be a grunt, medic, or engineer until I gain more experience. And that sounds great to me. In other Singleplayer/coop mods for BF2 I'd often run around in a light jeep as an engineer repairing armor (if the bots dont run me over). I enjoy a support role.

While I haven't had a chance to experience commander assets or the supply system in PRSP, I'm familiar (through reading) with them.

I'll probably see if I can find a not too full server tonight.

TG(TacticalGamer) is my favourite public server, as you often find the most dedicated players there; there are usually admins ready and willing to get rid of those [R-DIK]s that screw things up for others; the rules are suited best to realism, balance and teamplay and it has a generally good map rotation.

Other popular ones include:
-TCombat
-Tactics&Teamwork
-10thmountains community
-Heroes

A squad can sometimes be defined by it's custom squad name and is pretty straight forward.
For example, a squad named armour will have the intention of manning the armoured vehicles present.
Some may go for names such as Airforce, CAS ect, hinting towards air units and some for transport, meaning...well, transport.

However, this isnt always the case, as some die-in-the-wool veterans can be found naming squads in as irrelevantly as possible a way, in an attempt to draw some further halarity and origonality from the game; often going for names that involve chuck norris or toilet humour.

Your standard INF(infrantry) squad layout consists of:
1x Officer
1xMedic
1xAuto rifleman
1xLAT(Light Anti Tank)
1xRifleman-scoped
maybe with 1xgrenadier, 1xmarksman.

They may specialise and throw in some HAT (Heavy anti tank), AA rifleman, Spec-ops, sniper ect.

10-16 pings are nice; 100-120 are kind of meh and 150+ is not a good time.

This is my opinion

Hey there brother.
I understand how you feel about playing online.
I myself have only done it once, though it was pretty funny with all of the ill mannered teenagers on the server.
I do not think I have ever played anything online other then 'vanilla', so I'm as much of a n00b as you are.
And yes, I understand that online, I should never ever EVER drive the vehicles.
They have a tendency to flip over multiple times whenever I'm in the driver's seat...though most of the time I've never died from it.

At least we have SOME experience with the games, since we used to play them together on LAN.

To those of you who do not know me, I am the sister with projectile fingernails, as mentioned in one of his older posts.
I was allot younger back then and a bit immature...yeah, I admit I'm still immature at times, but not quite as often!

Bringing back memories, remember when team speak was giving us serious microphone problems and you were spazzing out because of it?
Back then I thought that you just weren't talking to me. hah!
Well to make the memory a bit fresher, I'll post a video for you.

 ...Was my voice really that squeaky back then?

Well anyways, to all of you forum people out there, I give a big "howdy doo!". :m1helmet:

Pvt Parts, one thing is for sure. If you want to play medic, or engineer, please do, since they are the two most sought after jobs and they are the two jobs that nobody wants to do. Therefore you will be doing a great service for your team like that. When the devs say a squad "should" consist of a bunch of people, its really bullocks in the heat of battle. A bunch of rifleman does such a much better job than a random bunch of assigned people. As long as a marksman is in place and perhaps an automatic rifleman, its all good and the rest is just history.

I think I'm one of the few people that actually enjoy being a medic or engy, but especially medic. I just wish the rifle had a scope, but besides that, I'm perfectly happy. In some instances, it's better to have iron sights.

You will always find idiots online, they just get dealt with quicker and there are less in PR. The other thing is, every now and again you might find yourself on a team of people with less intelligence than the bots. But its the good games that count. :)

However, it is good to know your location. If you are in europe and join battlearena or texas teamplayers you will be in for some interesting experiences as infantry (My shots never register on battlearena, simply because of my ping). Worth a try I guess though. Tactical Gamer is closer, so better regarding that. Basically, for infantry combat especially try and join a server in your continent before a server from another.
