New player, thoughts

Post by Cl_Flushentityhero »

I'm new to PR, and have tried hopping on a few servers. Here's my typical experience:

After reading through server messages that talk about how teamplay-focused and mature the server is and how voice comm is a must, I log in.

The team generally has no commander. The team has no support assets, no vehicles on the field to speak of, etc. I hop into a squad named "infantry," and the leader is on voice comm asking people to help him crew a tank. A couple no-name squads are full (held together only vaguely by their rally point), and they are the only people accomplishing anything because they have spawn points within a mile of the objective. These are the winning teams, by the way. The losing teams are like this too, but even moreso.

I was hoping that, as a new player, I'd learn by example of people who supposedly know how to play PR. That said, all I've seen on pubs is a lack of infrastructure and teams of 30 people with at best 10 able to do anything useful. Maybe I'm playing on the wrong servers, maybe there is some genius on display here beyond my comprehension, maybe the level of play on pub servers is pretty low in PR, I don't know. Any insight from the PR elite?

Which servers and when? That'll really affect what calibre of players you come up against. Once you get to know people around you'll figure out which server to join just by who's on it and you should get a decent game.

I've been doing morning/aft PT, so that might be part of the problem (assuming that evenings are better). Usually I'm pretty limited in server selection to the 2-3 populated ones, none of which I get spectacular ping to. I'll pay attention to the things you mention in the future though.

Tactical gamer is generally a pretty good server, just as long as a competant commander is in charge. And the most important rule of all is join a squad with voip and make sure you use it, and obey your squad leader.
I'm really sorry you have not had a good game yet, but trust me, you will. And all you will think then is, why didn't I download this month's ago?

I haven't had too many pleasant rounds for a long time. Not even when I have serveral servers to choose from and I play at prime time. Usually the situation is just like in the first post. Sometimes I might try commanding, but if no one follow orders or build assets, I usually give up and try to find another server. Only to find myself in identical situation as earlier.

I've also seen at least two aimbotters wreaking havoc just within few days and the second one didn't even get caught before it was to late to save the round, and mood in general.

I don't like the direction where we are going at the moment :(

.:iGi:. i find is a very good server, generally iGi guys on, also T&T is very good fun! I generally go for the clan hosted ones as you get clanmembers = teamwork.

Yes listen to scot! He is right, Clan = teamplay. The private side of this game is very good, you should as a matter of fact join a team or clan. Then you get a more, how can i say. Bigger foundation.

Its more easier to have fun.

Alot of laugh, and also wonderfull times when waiting for JDAM on south village! PWNZ!

I've noticed this a lot too.

The worst for me seems to be upon first entering the arena when all good squads are full or locked and the remainders are just there for kit hijacking.

But then I wait until the begining of the next round, and can get in on the early squad action and find a competant SL (I have yet to figure out which is worse, a crappy squad or no squad...) and some reasonable objectives and it's game on.

I have found that PR is great fun when it's played the way it was designed to be played. Otherwise, it's simply rubbish.

I just put in a join request for the PR tourney as I figured that would be the best way to get that consistant "rush" of PR tactical teamwork goodness. We'll see how that goes...

Well... it was the very same T&T server I left off today due to lack of team play and common goals.

Dont forget that even if the fragfest (speedkilling) is gone, in the beginning of PR you need to adapt to certain tactics()or you will be the one "Constantly fragged"...if the squad is full of new players this will be very hard to accomplish(if they insist on playing vBF2 style)...BUt dont worry just stay in there and try and find an active SL...i also noticed that they are hard to find lately but when you find him/her the gameplay, teamwork wise, will surely make your day fun and exciting. Dont forget to take your time and communicate alot. My first game of pr was lead by an amazing SL who broke it down so that all new what to do when we went into action. Im talking about situations like we got ordered not to fire unless fired upon since we where sneaking behind enemy lines...at one point a SM said.
-Squadleader, enenmy infantry spotted to the east do i have permission to take him out?
on which the SL replyed -HOLD YOUR FIRE !!!! (this gave us the element of surprise on the enemy since the did not expect that we where already deep within enemy lines). Then we proceded to escort our designated marksman to a crane from where he could cover our approach towards the area to be taken. as this was not enough he split us up into 2 fireteams before we made the attack and by God that takeover was rediculusly tactical and successfull...sorry for the rant but when the pieces fit together this game is "THE GAME" of games

hope to see you on the battlefield

Well flush, the thing about PR is that alot of us are vets (we have played the game since it first came out) and we tend to just slack off and play around once in a while. Its completely normal.

There will be the times where we wanna get right down and dirty and then times we just wanna laugh and have fun. Either way u must also remember that summer hit and new players (mostly students on summer) are here, so they are also trying to get the gist of the game.

But like said, battlearena is a fun place to be, where real PR experience comes and goes. But the best server for the tactics ud expect is tactical gamer. (im still abnned for like a year and the admins wont let me back in, no idea why) but i digress...

Id say that u must first join a good squad, where the leader actually knows what hes doing. Once that is accomplished, nothing else matters since you are too busy with your own squad.

Just play in servers, and please i do hope you read the manual. (although it seems like you did).

Cl_Flushentityhero - what time zone? the PR community is an international community with players from usa, uk, germany, russia, brazil, australia etc etc.

what servers have you joined? there is a large difference of quality play during peak times. one servers peak time could be another servers "**** shoot time".... it all depends where that server is located on the globe.

I find these games happen alot now, and it is very frustrating. Some games however, are very good.

If you want to play PR they way it was meant to be played, in fact, the best it will ever be played really, then join the project reality tournament while you still can. :)

Well i happen to be one of them students off for summer, played PR a bit on 0.5 didn't get along with it but came back and one of my squadmates mentioned about PR and the brist so gave .75 a whirl

so far i've found it to be brilliant, the best way to get teamwork is find some mates with BF2 bully them to download PR (or give them the installers) and then squad up in teamspeak/vent and do your own little squad

atm i have myself and 2 mates, so we always form our own squad, mostly do infantry stuff, but we have enough people for the right kits and to also set rallies etc

even with one mucker you can make a small sniper/marksman team and cover another squad

must also that iGi is a good place and often got alot of teamwork, if you see TPM-GinGerNiNja (thats me) in there say hello, join my squad and i'll try my best!

So, what all new players should do is:

Discover "the way of PR", and that involves reading the manual.

Try to be realistic about what you do.

But there is also one problem, find a good squad.

But as said before, if you have a friend or two, from Vanilla or if you know someone else, just join up on TS or Vent, that was infact the best point ive seen in this thread.

I just got my copy of BF2 this afternoon, and after a several rounds of frustration in vanilla BF, I decided to try the real deal. I played my first two rounds tonight, and it was amazing. Great teamwork and a ton of fun. I think it'll be a lot nicer once I get a mic, but it still felt nice to play something that took me away from simply playing a game...
