ability to sidestep while running

Post by Lynx »

One of the biggest annoyances that contribute to PR still feeling gamey is this in close quarters and firefights I keep wishing for the ability to sidestep while running because:

This way I can sidestep obstacles while still being able to keep my eyes on the target or corner

I think this would be a big general improvement but especially in close quarters. I just hope the engine supports this.

also if this is implemented could you make sidestepping slightly faster while running by increasing the stride?

and yes I've searched but didn't find anything

You can sidestep while running.

And yeah... try sprinting sidewards with full gear while looking in another direction... if you don't bump your head too hard come back and report how it went...

Yea tried it.

I do it all the time in paintball it lets keep my eyes on the target
and that's loaded down with a harness full of paint balls and pods

the idea is that I don't want to let my eyes of the enemy while I'm running
do you think the engine could support this

You can't turn your head in BF2, so you would have to sprint sidewards... I doubt you can do that

Agree:
If you try to sprint sidewards with your whole gear incl. Gun, you gonna loose your balance.

In worstcase you gonna bounce sidewards :-)

It would be very nice to be able to lean, but that wont work, its hard-coded.

Sprinting sidewards... I dunno, i'd hit some object for sure. In BF2/PR, there is no damage when you hit an object when running, and you cant lose balance when you step on something (well, unless it goes down 100 meters). Both should be in game, or none of them. But anyway, hardcoded i'm sure.

i dont know how to code it so i wont speculate on that, but i do know it would require reworking a new animation for it.

But think about it, when at your normal pace in PR its allready maybe 2 or 3 times faster than your personal walking pace because you are running and not walking. when you hold the rifle to your eye, your pacing which is more like normal pacing. so when your sprinting real life, unles your an athlete you wont be able to zig zag laterally with 80 pounts of gear on you...so turning is more appropriate. i wouldnt chage it like your thinking, but i would try and put in a 1p animation that wobbles the camera around a lot while sprinting so people cant see with the current superhuman accurasy.

Things like these require the source code and maybe even then it is impossible to do.

But it really shouldn't be done. Even without all the gear, I'd still say that it's practically impossible to SPRINT and not look exactly where your going. When you sprint you push your centre of gravity forward massively, and there's no way you could balance yourself without alot of focus.

You can run around obstacle just not sprint. I suppose you could run a slalom course but Id like to see you sprint a slalom course at full speed. I see an olympic discipline coming up

well looks like the consensus is that it can't be done and yet I do it all the time on a paintball field even while I'm weighed down

what I am much apposed to is being forced to run only in the direction your facing.
so when I'm trying to flank I run diagonally to the target. but the way it is now I can not see what my target is about to fire on me or fire in a different direction

SO my challenge is this: to anyone who under 250 pounds
stuff all your text books in a backpack and try to run/hop sideways
it can be done and you won't fall (after the third attempt)

Even if You're convinced you can't running sideways,
you ignore the greatest benefit if this were implemented in game:

It would simulate the ability to look left and right similar to the game: Armed Assault
You still shouldn't be able to fire while running so it doesn't turn into an unreal tournament.

still don't like the idea?
if your engaging an enemy and he's about to use the LMG on you
you'd be able to find cover around corners faster in stead of having to turn then run behind a corner it would simulate your character dodging to the side

I think that stumbling would only hurt the game play though

ok that's all. flame away

There is huge difference between "run" and "sprint"... When you're using L. Shift key (default settings), you're using sprint. You can't sprint sideways for sure ;)

(There was disscusion about it long time ago)

The definition of "sprint" is that your running, but as fast as you possibly can. I don't see how you can maintain your fastest possible speed and also integrate any sort of sideways motion, even if you could I don't see how you'd manage to maintain balance.

well there's 2 ways that I do it here's how you can:

you can pivot your leg so that your toes are pointed diagonally then push off and it results in you running diagonally but when you do this you won't be able to sprint at your maximum speed although you can still run fast

the second way to do it is when your toes are facing forward and it's just like regular sprinting where you push back except you also push to the side giving you a sideways hop as you sprint forward
maintaining your balance this way can be tricky; you can't move like this continuously without falling so your only able to do this sideways hop once every 4 times your foot lands

In paintball I have to do this often when I play in the woods. while sprinting I often have to dodge to the side to avoid trees
