China maps that look like China

Post by Ymir »

Am I the only one tired of these post-card picturesque maps of China with the ridiculous cultural-revolution posters and mis-use of writing? For the maps that are supposed to happen "in China" I'd like to see some much more plausible urban maps.

The Sizhuan Earthquake makes great reference material:

I guess I'm splitting hairs on aesthetic details, but on the next ones could we at least do without the silly cultural revolution art?

Maps like Ramiel, Al Basrah, and Korengal Valley, seem really authentic, so it'd be nice to see the China maps get the same treatment.

Well only if that area is a warzone like the other maps. And with warzone I mean the area of a conflict that is going on for a longer time than the battle you are fighting. Because thats how the Al Basrah one looks. Korengal I dont know why. But it looks and feels good as well. It would be nice to see a warzone like china map but I dont care the clean look those maps got.

If you want to make those buildings it's going to require new statics, feel free to model them and people will use them in their maps.

Barracuda/Tad Sae havent really got much writings or picturesqueness, they seem pretty realistic as a Asian forest area and a pacific island

Not sure you'll get much attention by starting a rant thread about how your tired of something.

Maybe you could make a *positive* useful thread with all different types of reference pics, from google earth pics to interesting landscape pics to road signs pic etc etc.

Maybe a storyline or something similar to go along with an idea of yours.

Possibly inspire one of the mappers and give them some ideas. ;)

Just not so sure you'll get a positive response (or a response at all) when your opening statement is:

You guys should be more respectful to the people posting suggestions. This is a totally valid suggestion.

It would indeed be nice to have a Chinese industrial map, however none that I know of are currently in the works. However, we do have some urban/industrial areas based in the Balkans under construction, and they look similar in terms of an environment.

It is a bit stupid rather of DICE to decide to make the MEC maps actually have urban statics while the Chinese statics looks like it's Forbidden City every where. :(

I don't have time, but if I had time I'd start doing those statics :(

Agreed, what the hell is your guy's problem with new members coming in here and voicing their opinion? Show more respect....

I never thought of this as a big deal, but now that you have elaborated on it, I understand and agree. While I won't be disappointed at all if they keep the maps how they are, it would be an improvement if they made the maps a bit more realistic in terms of scenery and terrain.

I don't believe it had anything to really do with the fact that he is new, it is the way he addressed his post, it was almost condescending.

But that is out of the way, isn't it? So, in all honesty-I would like to see some industrial/urban china maps (just, not so similar to sunset city, it almost seems... silly as of v0.8 ).

IMO its not any forum member's place to educate another member on his post. thats up to the forum administrators. And a bit lame to chew him out on a forum instead of to his face :D

i think its a really good suggestion, i too am interested in seeing some new chinese scenery. An earthquake scene might be appropriate, as it would be a place with a lot of cover, minimum civilian collateral damage and the area would be weakened in almost all aspects of economy and military resources.

A lot of people on the forums "Rant", and almost everyone criticises the hard work and effort that R-CONs and R-DEVs do, conveniantly forgetting that it takes many many months to complete a project that they work on (sometimes), and it is a very valid responce for an R-CON to say, if you dont like it make it yourself, because they are correct! there are modding tutorials in the community modding section if you guys are interested, but i can imagine the thoughts running through your heads now that you would like to brush off... "Nahh...too much work" so please remember that before you criticise or flame someone.

Maybe you have heard of the saying..."If your not part of the solution, your part of the problem"? (Example of problem: Closing forum threads due to forum members spamming and flaming)

We only have currently one Chinese Urban map, Sunset City that was crated for PR v0.4, around 2 or more years ago using the vbf2 ME City statics with a reskin so they had chinese text on signs etc.

Currently no new Chinese Urban maps are in the works, partly because there is not really that many statics to support it, apart from reskinned ME City buildings, so to make a really decent chinese city map would take a look of static work.

Again, all our maps apart from me are all working on current projects, with myself knowing what my next projects are more or less, i have a bunch of ideas just doing other work right now and none of thous ideas are a Chinese city map. So here comes the normal bit, if you want it, make it. I and many other mappers out there have taken a huge amount of time to write up loads of very detailed tutorials to help new guy get on your free and make new maps for PR (And other mods or just vbf2). Coderedfox like 8 or so months ago was just a community member, he finally took it upon himself to start Kornegal Valley, and now its in the top 3 of most popular v0.8 maps, its not impossible, thou I can't say that CRF isn't talented as he had good background knowledge of 3DsMax and general 3D work etc but still, very possible and all of the PR mappers started off from no where, including myself, just a much longer time ago thou when there was hardly any information about on mapping, hence why I've made a bunch of tuts.

This tells you all you need to know about getting a pretty decent map made if you are interested.

well considering that many chinese cities consist of endless numbers of 50+ storey high rises (trust me, i happen to live in one), i doubt they would be much fun to play in.

but the OP does have a point about the posters, ffs the cultural revolution ended 40 years ago and all communist zeal died along with mao. 'communist' china now has one of the most voraciously capitalist economies in the world, there should be billboards of gucci and prada instead of propaganda paintings.

Your talking about me? I wasn't trying to be disrespectful mate, I was actually trying to help the guy out.

So starting a thread with "I'm tired of your maps, they are ridiculous" (yes I paraphrased) Is ok?

I actually saw that as disrespectful to the mappers which is why I tried to help the guy make a more positive/useful thread and hoped this would make it more likely for him to get a response.

Sorry if I came across as disrespectful, I certainly didn't mean to. :?

I'd love to have some mountainous or desert style map for once. As fludbud said, the modern chinese cities could indeed not be very fun to play on and a desert chinese map would really offer something different from the stereotype jungle maps.

I apologize, but I must resurrect :)
Especially since PR 0.9 is coming out, I would like to add some suggestions that could make maps that actually look like China!

Don't get me wrong, I love the maps currently featuring the PLA. I don't want to give a bad impression or have others say "do it yourself" because to tell you the truth...I'm horrible with the BF2 editor. :\

I will just name some small (or big) additions that could potentially help new PLA maps (hoping it comes out in 0.9!) look more realistic!

1. Pollution
Yes, China is quite polluted. I been to China a couple of times and I have to say, I never seen a clear blue sky before.
These two reference pictures are good examples of what I am talking about
http://www.photoeverywhere.co.uk/east/c ... n01438.jpg
http://www.atlasnetwork.org/networknews ... f_smog.jpg

On a better day: http://www.china-tour.cn/images/China_P ... Museum.jpg

Operation Blue Pearl seems to have the right idea
http://forum.i3d.net/attachments/main-b ... een009.jpg

2. Wide roads
With a huge population, there's bound to be wide roads.
Most main roads include 2-3 lanes on both sides, if not more
http://www.treehugger.com/china-traffic-j01.jpg

Then, on both sides nearest to the buildings, there is usually a bike lane making the road even wider
http://www.wisechat.com/images/China_1419.JPG
http://www.asianews.it/files/img/CHINA_Bike.jpg<-- notice the trees!

3. Buildings
Of course, due to China's massive population, not a lot of people live in houses, but rather apartments. And for sure, no one lives in houses as shown in BF2 :P

Mentioned before, huge skyscrapers do not enhance game play, which is true. But there are cities in China where there are buildings only 5-10 stories tall
http://cache3.asset-cache.net/xc/571161 ... 4B24B4128C
http://cache1.asset-cache.net/xc/533198 ... 4B24B4128C
^ These are similar to the MEC buildings

I hope this helped! I also hope to see a future PLA map! :D

Double agreed. Jeez reading through the posts I had at first thought that the PR forums had completely devolved into a bunch of elitist pricks while I was gone, but you two have proven those initial thoughts wrong. Thank you.

Also for a third agreement, I agree with OP. It would be nice to eventually have some realistic Chinese maps instead of the stereotypical curved pointy roof buildings.

Edit: Well **** I didn't even realize this thread was necroed. I guess that completely destroys any thoughts I had. :p
