I don't know if this is hardcoded (i believe it could be used like the M203 GL, i might be wrong)but it hasn't been suggested before.
Could we have this attached to the engineers rifle?
My suggestion is 2 firing modes for the M26 MASS, slugshot for breaching doors and buckshot for raiding buildings or slugshot and rubber shells in Insurgency for the civies
That would change the unrealistic -and easy sometimes- play of collaborators being able to heal, throw ropes and call for mortars while the Coalition forces all can do is watch them.
Us army have been using these since 2003 i think in Iraq and Afghanistan.
We could have 12 gauge shells or 20 gauge shells for lower recoil.

iirc the shotgun atm can shoot civi's without penalty (for when they flee to the water)

but this will need a new model right?

It sounds interesting. Especially the part about the rubber bullets. I've been thinking about that for a while whether I should post that idea or not (although I had to search for it first), since it's a cat and mouse game you sometimes can't win from a civie. (but that's a different thread!)

Wikipedia: In May 2008 the Army announced it would procure 35,000 units
So yes its been used in small numbers until now, i read somewhere less than 250.

I think the M26 MASS and similar Remington 870 "MasterKey" have been suggested here before. No, I doubt it would be hard-coded, since it would be just like the under-slung grenade launchers; a separate weapon slot.

Not many have made it into the field, as far as I know. The Army still has in inventory and recently (2005) purchased several thousand Mossberg 590A1 shotguns. Who will get first dibs on the M26 MASS, I have no idea, but the Mossberg will probably stick around for a while. Even though the MASS has a standalone weapon capability, a designated pump gun (distinguished by marking tape as per unit SOP) for less lethal ammunition is a desirable item in the tool kit.
