Hydras run infinetily, or explode after some time?

Just played a match on a map that i can recall its name, err, the one with chinese VS USMC, USMC gets carrier with 2 hydra Hues and a few transport hues, no LBs and no boats. Chinese has missile silo.

Anyway, my squad set up a hell of a defense at the swamps and after some time we noticed that a few people started to die randomly. No shots, no zips, no explosions, no indication of where it was coming from.

After a while we noticed that it was way too accurate to be a sniper, i was sniping my self and i set myself up on the plausable locations of a sniper, nada.

Figured it had to be head shot sniping, but ppl were getting killed running, zigzagging, no way a person could kill like that.

After confronting the USMC abotu it, we saw a guy who had a huge number of kills and no deaths, name was snowball i figure. In anycase, the USMC said it was Hydras fired from the carrier. Apparently the bf2 engine cuts off the hydras at a certain rage and u dotn see the hydra nor the explosion past the spot where the engine cuts it off, but it still kills u like it would if it didnt cut it off??

I know the AAs cant reach the carrier for spawn raping purposes even though u hear the lock on tone, so i figured the hydras have the same type of restriction?

Can anybody clarify that?

What you are thinking of is "Ghost Missles". It's a bug in which missles are fired at a large distance and don't visually render after awhile. Thus, there are explosions, but you don't see them.

Bad behavior in my book, since it simply invites AA-abuse.

I checked the files, Hydra 70 projectile lives for 20 seconds before self-destructing (or "dying"), it's fired from the Huey at the speed of 740, do the math.

It's around 4 km.

So yes, the Hydras can be fired across the map, welcome to beyond-visual-range fire.

What would be a sensible range for self destruct? Ideally it'd be just before the engine turns the missiles into ghosts, but that may not be faesible if that's too short.

And Teamwork to kill the OP4.

As said they live for 20 seconds.

I don´t know hwy you can´t see the explosions, because they are triggered on impact. Sometimes effects don´t render properly anyway.

The trail is set to disappear after around 1 second or so, I can´t remember exactly. To kind of simulate that the motor burns out after a shot time (however the rockets are still moving incredibly fast, I think CRV7 flechette rockets get up to mach 3).

Problem in PR is hydras have no acceleration like other missiles.

Time to add gravity to the hydras perhaps?
And a laser range finder on the HUD and then a sight like the one on the grenadier kit, since you can't have a pipper.

Would also get rid of the silly unrealistic chopper vs chopper hydra fights.

I agree with the helicopter fights, however no drop simulates that the pipper will show where they hit.

I would agree with your suggestion if tanks and APCs got the same treatment.
