PR quick guide

Post by space »

I have just been looking back at my first threads on the forum. One of my first posts on the forum, was a suggestion for a PR quick guide. https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f18-pr-suggestions/37358-pr-quick-guide.html

I was told that there was already a guide at this location:

60 Second Newbie Guide - Project Reality Wiki

As you can see, it hasn't been updated for the last 2 releases, and also its hard to find ( how many of you have seen this guide, or even the PR wiki? )

If you click "Guide" at the top of the forum page, you are presented with all this largely out of date info:

User Guide - Project Reality Wiki

To be fair, everyone now gets the latest manual installed on game installation, but the shortcut for the pdf guide on my PC, has been deleted - see if any of you guys can quickly find a location to download the guide on its own - good luck :D

As you can imagine, this isnt very user friendly to new comers.

Anyway. I thought it would be good to write a list of the most important tips for new comers to PR. I know we have a manual, and many people love to scream "Read the manual!" but the fact is that most people will not read, what is a very long manual to a mod, until they have tried it and seen weather or not they like it. This is a catch 22 situation, as without understanding PR, you're unlikely to enjoy it.

Ive written out a basic list myself, which I will then edit as per your suggestions - please say what you think should be added/removed. The plan is to make it as short as possible, and only to give the most important information. Maybe this could be incorporated into the introduction of the manual, or even some kind of splash screen when PR is installed?

This list gives you a basic idea of how PR works. For more information and playing enjoyment, it is highly recommended that you read the manual.

Important tips for PR

1 Join a Squad and work as a team. This is vital if you want to enjoy PR. If your Squad Leader isnt leading - try another squad. Follow orders given by the Commander and Squad leader. Also be polite and courteous to other players - PR is a small community and intentional teamkilling etc, will quickly get you banned from all servers. If you are new, let your squad know, and in most cases they will help you.

2. Do not waste assets. Destroyed vehicles cost tickets and take up to 20mins to respawn, so practice using them on the training server.

3. Understand the spawn system. The area of play on some PR maps is very large. The squad specific rally points that are put down by your squad leader, allow you to spawn close to the action. Teams can also build upto 2 firebases, which can have defenses such as HMG's and AA missiles. Any player can spawn at a firebase, and they are indicated by a green triangle on the map.

4. Deviation and warm up. All firearms in PR have a deviation system. To minimise deviation you should always try to fire from a prone position, and allow your rifle to settle for a few seconds before firing (sniper rifes require a settle time of upto 8 secs) Also you should select single fire mode, and reload often after contacts. AT/AA kits have an extended setup and lock on time.

5. Most armour requires a two man crew. Armoured vehicles have a 30 second startup lock on their armaments, so if you "one man" such a vehicle, and encounter the enemy, its very likely you will be defenceless - it will also earn you a kick from many servers.

6. Get a mic and use VOIP. Having a mic, makes you a much more effective member of your team, as it allows quick and easy communication with your squad mates.

7. When you die, it is possible to be revived upto 2 mins later ( as long as you do not select "give up" from the map screen ) Every squad should have a medic, so let him know you are dead, and give your squad time to secure the area, and save you. This is one of the many reasons why you should stick together as a squad.

8. Kits - Specialist kits are requested at supply crates or APCs. Only pick up specialist kits if you know how to use it, and your squad actually needs it, and ensure to keep yourself safe so the kit isnt lost. Most kits have very limited ammo, which can be resupplied at supply crates. Armoured vehicles require a crewman kit, and aircraft require a pilots kit, which can both be selected at the vehicle.

Yeah the comic idea is great - it doesn't put people off with a wall of text, and it doesn't say the total page numbers, so people are more inclined to read though it.

Where is it from and who produced it? It looks like its from the Tactics and teamwork clan. Unfortunately newcomers are unlikely to be looking at clans before they've played PR - maybe something like this could be made to pop up when PR is installed, or played before the first game?

It mentions that there's other comics for more advanced info - where are they?

Im sure that if there was a series of these guides, in the style of that one, they would be very popular!

( If Id seen it, I wouldn't have had to write out all the first 2 posts either  )

I've always suggested a video intro (possibly for 1.0 release) that outlines all the features and tips for PR (2142 style). Put a nice little comedic twist on it and you got a winner.

@nicoliani: Very nice comic. If it is expanded a bit more it would be a perfect first step for those who never even played BF2 (Since it explains a lot of the base mechanics we did not change) My manual only details the changes for vBF2 veterans which is probably the pre-pr experience most of our players (certainly not all of them) have.

As for the video: It's mainly a matter of someone taking his precious time and making one. :)
