[Question] Distance Calculations.
I'm naturally inclined towards sniping, it's just how I roll, and I love that you need to compensate for bullet drop in this game, makes it that much more awesome when you score that perfect shot.
But I am having trouble with the distance calculations, I never know exactly how far away my targets and I can't calculate it based on bullet drop since I don't know exactly how much the bullet drops per 50 metres or so.
So is there a special trick, other than being SL and marking it on the map?
This is a problem for DMR's too, and since they shouldn't really be squad leaders or in a sniper squad, they are stuck guessing the distance and missing, doesn't help that the DMR is extremely unaccurate.
So how do I make my shots more definite and less guesstimates?

Re: [Question] Distance Calculations.
If you get to know the map, you can use it to find your position from yourself to any close landmarks by the target, and estimate how far it is from your dot to the landmark. You could find out what the view distance is on some maps and narrow it down a little, say less than 400 meters.
It just takes practice, just like aiming an RPG to find out how high the drop is on that.
If all else fails, aim for the head, so atleast you may hit the body

I believe the bullet flight path is a straight line (no drop or arc) until it specified "range" at which point it starts to drop.
If you're using a sniper rifle you should be in a sniper squad and have a marker on your target showing your range. Thats how you know.
Sniper rifles are ranged to 700m. After that you need to start compensating for drop.

I thought they were zeroed at 600m.
Anyway, another helpful thing to know would be whether the drop rate is exponential like in reality or if it's a set number, like a 1 to 10 ratio.

Get a spotter. Real snipers have them. It helps a lot. Or if you're lone wolfing being the SL means you can lay your own markers. After that its a matter of learning how to guess the drop after 600m. But don't lone wolf; don't be a twat.

Re: [Question] Distance Calculations.
Well from what I've gathered spec ops being gone and giving the SOFLAM to the sniper makes spotters pretty much useless.
Besides, you try asking a random stranger to sit for 2 hours LOOKING at the enemies through the binoculars while you shoot them.
It's like: "Look, theres another enemy YOU won't get to kill. *pang*"
I even have a friend who plays this game, but I wouldn't ask him to spot either, since he's not the sniper type and it's quite a boring job.
So I'm kinda running out of options, I just make sure I work twice as hard to spot and snipe at the same time.
But I really need some facts on the way it works, I've tried setting my markers and such but without any indication for bullet drop per metre how can I possibly compensate for it?
On a Training Server you can't see where you hit, there are no shooting ranges for practice.
I think we need something like that.

I always ask for a spotter, never get turned down.
Obviously you just don't know how much patience some people have on the battlefield... =/ sorry to say.
(also, making sure your spotter is your squad leader or someone with soflam is very very good btw =D, hence sniper squads)
lastly, shooting ranges have already been requested

I still say it seems mean to ask someone to be a spotter. :O

No it would be mean to force said somebody to be spotter, it's polite to ask =)
I usually can't snipe anyways, so i'm usually the one doing the spottering, it's not really that bad so long as their is some chatter over voip. The most annoying thing is when people go 30 minutes without... saying.. anything >< not even a "hello" or.. "****.. i got hit".

Re: [Question] Distance Calculations.
I love spotting, it's not a extremley hard job, i just get my binocs out and scope around. One thing i have found thats useful is the specialist kit in a sniper squad. Though only works on urban maps. But it is handy when that ideal sniping spot has no ladder.

Re: [Question] Distance Calculations.
maybe there should be some suggestion for the devs to create some sort of sniper squad support? a new kit kind-of-officer kit would have to be created, the spotter kit, which would make your squad able to request sniper kits.
pros:
-no inf squads with a sniper, playing lonewolf but for actually being on the squad (but no talking, no teamwork)
-snipers getting a spotter, which would have points as crewman kits do or pilots.
-this spotter kit would be able to give orders on complete silence, you could give him a hook and some traps, and a SOFLAM to check distances.
-no more nubs requesting sniper kits on inf squads, giving much more importance to the marksman kit as sniping squad player.
cons:
-any con?

Re: [Question] Distance Calculations.
its really against the PR ethos but if you are SL just place a move marker on their position
