How to hit with rifles at long range?

Post by Menigmand »

I would like to know your ideas on hitting targets at long range through ACOG - let's say 250-300 meters, where the bullet impacts are not rendered, so it's impossible to really know the impact points.

I'm finding it impossible to hit anything at this range, despite taking into account deviation and recoil, so I'm wondering if there's a slight bullet drop or something else that I don't know about ?

Maybe someone can post a screenshot of an engagement where the enemy is smaller on screen than the red triangle of the ACOG, and give hints on the optimal aiming point ?

If I remember correctly rifles are zeroed in at 300. So no buttle drop up to that range.

I just put that tip of the point on the object or pixel and fire away. Supressing him or scaring him. Usually though I wont even bother with these high ranges. I'd rather move in closer and scare him or fight him on my terms.

It means I should atually aim lower for closer ranges?

(Ive also just been putting the point over the enemy and popping off shots, hoping to get at least a lucky hit once in a blue moon... but ive never seen it happen - maybe the damage is much reduced at this range?)

Bullets will start to drop after 300 m.

It mean's put the tip of the triangle's point on the target. If your putting it above then your shots are going over the target.

Generally if you've fired a few rounds you should see a tracer round which will help you adjust fire.

I just realized it is some hit registration problem, that also show up at close range once in a while.

Today I was prone and spent an entire magazine on a russian, shot by shot, while he didnt move. That was at around 50 meter range and he was taking up a good portion of the scope. All these shots "hit" him, but to no effect.

Probaly a mix of lag and Polish Vodka...

Ha ha :) It was definitely not lag at least (33 ms, and the incident lasted about 3 seconds overall)

So I guess it was the vodka.. either that, or my target was Stalin, Man of Steel.

Patience is the only tip. Wait at least 2 seconds if you're at any great distance between shots. And wait up to about 6-8 seconds before opening fire. If they're closer than say 200m aim low slightly as you'll still get a hit, you won't over shoot. Other than that it's down to lag/numbers/whatever god you pray to basically

4 seconds if you have time.
2 seconds if you're rushed and suppress them while gaining accuracy.
1 second between rounds is what i use for decent accuracy. sometimes i shoot with faster intervals when the enemy is running for some cover.
close up it's just auto/burst/rapid.

also, learn the spread of the rifles on auto, especially the ak74 series. you can force them onto target from quite a distance with good groupings.

You need to look into Hitfixer my friend.

BF2/2142 Hit reg fix ( hitfixer ) - Tactical Gamer

It changes BF2's interpolation, among other settings, to accurately reflect your ping. It only helps so much, but it should allow you to land your shots at 50m.

I'll take a second to head off all of the people who are going to claim it's a hack. PB allows it, and server admins allow it as long as you convert the .ahk to an .exe (most servers just auto-kick anyone running autohotkey, whether or not you are actually running a hack). It simply fixes settings that are openly modifiable by anyone. This app does what BF2 should have done from the start.

Here is a thread on the forum if you're interested.

hitfixer is the shit. someone at dice said it doesn't work but that's horse poo. hitfixer 2.0 has made my game a lot more enjoyable <3

Dice just doesn't want to admit that they left what should have been a dynamic setting stay static, and that someone alse had to come along behind them and do their dirty work. How did this even make it into production?

I'll bet that conversation went like this (in Swedish of course):

"Hey, shouldn't we compensate for players with higher pings? Say, through an interpolation formula?"

"Yeah, that's a great idea! How about we have the program check the ping when the player joins the server, and again a few minutes after that to see if it's changed? Then we can compensate for ping differences between players!"

"That sounds like a lot of work."

"You're right. F*ck it, let's just set it at 100 and hope nobody notices."

Lovely.

They said it does not work because the game still work with the server settings, so it basically shows hits that are not hits, or am I wrong ??

you are wrong.
what does the server settings have to do with anything? in pr, you see when you hit cause the enemy dies. i'm not saying i get 100% hit detection, but it's a lot higher than if i wouldn't use it on high ping servers.

the ping fixer is a client side fix that syncs you to the servers ping instead of calculating from the static, default ping of 35.

just boot vanilla bf2, join a karkand server with high ping, play some without hitfixer 2.0, then initiate hitfixer and you'll see that you can lead targets properly and also get less dust shots.
