Realistic Maps
Guys, i was wondering... i feel that this mod made the Use of binoculars really something important, meaningful u know? and its fun to see a person have to peek above a hill to use his binoculars safely... i think that looks realistic. Now, I would think it would be awesome if:
Everyone gets a GPS map (like the normal map, but with limited field of view, like, you can only see a 4 grid radius instead of the whole thing)... he should also NOT be able to hold his weapon while doing this (I mean, maybe the map could be some kind of "weapon", i mean, u pick it using a weapon bind (which could be remaped to "M" if you want)), I mean, if someone looks at his map (GPS in this case), he should take cover as he wouldnt be able to simply aim his weapon and shoot, he would have draw it (if thats the name of when, for example, a pistol is in its holster and u "draw" it).
The Squad Leaders (officer kit) and Snipers get a Situation Awarness Grid (SAG) - or whatever u wanna call it (I would call it Situation Awarness Map, but than it would be SAM, the anti air thingy). to use this, he must lie down on the ground (as if he was putting it and opening it on the ground... similar to the Deployed LMG, when you have to lie down to use it). This would show absolutely everything on the map, i mean, it shows all the grids). He could use this to send orders to squad members, see and set markings and everything.
Both maps (GPS and SAG) would show everything on the map, but the difference is:
-the GPS can't be used to send orders to Squad Members.
-the GPS has a limited grid view.
-the GPS can be used in any instance, while the SAG can only be used while lying down.
-the GPS is Black-and-White, and shows virtual imagery, maybe including elevation.
-the SAG has a sattelite image of the battlefield.
-the SAG is limited to Squad Leaders (officer kit) and Snipers, while everyone (including snipers and Officer Kits) get the GPS.
-you can move while using the GPS, but not when using the SAG.
-you can't use the SAG while on a helicopter (for example). You have to get out, lie down, get the coordinates and then tell the pilot.
-helicopter pilots and crewman should have a special kind of map, maybe the normal one (the present one).
for the GPS and SAG, take as an example Far Cry 2's map style.
http://www.mmocrunch.com/wp-content/...farcry2map.jpg (ignore the green words...)
the GPS would be the right thingy (black and white, if possible), and the SAG would be the one to the left. it would be cool if it had different sizes... who here has played far cry 2 knows that the maps have different sizes... and it would have to be phisically bigger (you would really have to lay on the ground to open it without streaching your arms as far as you can like a highway map)
If you guys could implement this idea to the game, remember to remove the position of people and vehicles on the Squad select tab (when u press caps lock (default)).
The GPS could have a zoom out capability, showing the whole map. but you then u guys gotta make it so that you cant see friendly positions (but you can see yours), and the Caches and flags are visible.
now i dont know if it isnt possible because of Battlefield 2 engine limitations (i think the engine is Refractor 2, right?), but in my opinion, this would make the game even more awesome. and would encourage more teamwork as of covering the SL while he checks his map (SAG), which would take a longer time to open it and check it, as opposed to the the quick CapsLock he presently uses to send orders to SM.
It would also disencourage people to check their GPS while walking down the road, as opposed to the semi transparent map that presently exists, and in any emergency he would have to take a longer time to take his weapon and aim, as opposed to what can be done presently (u can use your weapon while checking the map)
I think this would be pretty awesome.
Let me know what you guys think!
Cheers,

Re: Realistic Maps
I think it sounds good. Except for not being to be used in helicopters. I think in transports it should be able to be used.

Re: Realistic Maps
Well you mention the dropping your weapon to look at your GPS, well as far as i know you cant actually fire with your map out, so you've already got that. Also i always seem to find faults with ideas that make SL need to talk to their members more. You are not gaurenteed a decent SL, ive been in a game where there were no squads left to join apart from one where the SL doesnt know what hes doing and hasnt got a mic.

Re: Realistic Maps
That's interesting, actually. Something that has always bothered me was this real time super map of ours. But changing the map mechanics is probably the most modifying change possible in the game, so there's got to be some careful thoughts through this.

Re: Realistic Maps
yes, when I said that in choppers it should be able to be used the "normal" one, I mean, its the big real time map that victor_phx. all pilots should get that, and all crewman as well. I agree that some SL dont know what to do. therefore, they shouldnt be SL. I understand what you mean with SL without a mic or fast typing skillz. and as I understood, your server didnt have any good squads, right?Cheditor wrote:Well you mention the dropping your weapon to look at your GPS, well as far as i know you cant actually fire with your map out, so you've already got that. well, then you shouldve whether change server or change squad. If that didnt work, as the SL if you can be one.
Now, PR is a game of communication. sometimes in a firefight whoever communicates better wins the battle

Re: Realistic Maps
Ok cool, thought you meant the pilot gets the normal one and the passengers would have to get out of the heli to use the map.

If you use the "M" map you can do everything while it's open.Cheditor wrote:Well you mention the dropping your weapon to look at your GPS, well as far as i know you cant actually fire with your map out

Re: Realistic Maps
depends: if im not mistaken, everyone can use weapons except for the pilot and the copilot in a trans helo. the Copilot wouldnt be able to see the map (unless he has the pilot kit). all the other passengers would be able to use the GPS, but not the SAG.gaurd502 wrote:Ok cool, thought you meant the pilot gets the normal one and the passengers would have to get out of the heli to use the map.
