Need help choosing OS for new comp

Post by Jordanb716 »

I'm building myself a new comp but I cant decide which OS to get. XP or vista? I use XP and vista is from what limited contact I've had with it rather irritating but then again it might be that I'm just not used to it and I've heard that its actually become rather stable with the service packs that have been released but I don't know. I was thinking about getting it if nothing else to make it easier to upgrade to win7 if thats even a good idea. Also should I get 32 or 64 bit? I've done some research but I don't have enough experience with different operating systems and I cant choose. The parts are coming in tomorrow and I can't choose. admittedly I probably should have thought this through earlier but its too late now. Can anyone help me or at least provide an opinion?

XP has support until 2011 IIRC
it has everything you need.
it uses much less resources than vista.
its stable.

I vote for xp ;) its the best IMO

Get 64 bit if you intend to have more than 3GB RAM.

nuff said.
thats what I was thinking the problem is what do I get in the meantime? If I were to preorder the win7 upgrade do I need vista to be able to use it or would it upgrade from XP as well? with the 32 vs 64 thing I've heard that some programs wont run in a 64 bit system. Will PR have any problems with it? Does anyone here have a 64 bit system that could give me an example of how it runs?

'[R-CON wrote:creepin;1069145']I'm running Vista 64 bit, and i havent had any problems.

and every 32bit program will run on a 64 bit OS, that what you heard was BS.

64 bit OS enables you to run 64 bit apps, but doesnt hinder you from running 32bit apps as well..

and for your other question:
Lifehacker - Windows 7 Upgrade Details for XP and Vista Users - Upgrading
nice thanks for your help!

Just get hold of the Windows 7 (free) release candidate for now, and buy the finished one when it is out in October, and re-install then.

I was thinking about that but I'd rather not have M$ taking constant reports and more importantly I would rather have the stability and support that come with XP or vista. This is going to be my primary computer and I don't have enough money at this time for a backup HDD. If something failed I would be screwed. Right now I'm leaning towards vista. I read that XP 64 is a separate disk whereas with Vista and win7 its going to be included in the main installer along with the 32 bit version. Although that might have changed cause I cant find a 64 bit version of XP anywhere.

A lot more stable, and their are ways to stop it reporting back ;)

Id say win 7 x64 all the way, or Mac OSX 10.5.7 [ideneb] ;)

Hmmm..... what are these ways you speak of? Besides disconnecting the internet of course. :)

Win 7 really is a big improvement to vista. I see vista as a beta compared to even the RC of 7.
