[Help] Random crashing in BF2 editor

Post by UncleSmek »

Been working on my map for a while now and been experiencing random crashes as i try to connect large roads. I was just done with the blufor staging point and my Bf2 editor crashes. And its not only when i try to connect roads, its just random. Is this common? Is there a way to fix this?

I had to put down many projects before due to the random crashing. Its very frustrating to have a map crashing after 3 hours of work you know. Please help me so I can get this show on the road.

System specs:

4gb RAM
ATI radeon HD4650 1gb
vista 32bit
AMD phenom quad core processor 2,20 ghz.

well the editor is kind of a real *****, it crashes here and there.

i think vista user crash a lot more and have more problems than XP users.

and always! do not trust the editor and save after 10 min of work or so i would advise!!!
and always make back ups of your level!

good luck with your maps :)

editor uses alot of memory and if it cant get the memory it wants it acts very much like my girl when she doesnt get her way. so my suggestion would be close down anything your not using in the background. and if ur techy enough go into task maneger and give bf2 editor a higher priority level

HangMan: BF2 Editor, it has very strict limitations memory wise, and crashes all the time. Its like a girl. Treat it with respect and take it slow and you'll get places. Rush and get ahead of yourself and it will turn around and punch you in the mouth

you might be able to salvage a lot from your old/broken map files :)
use the editor to create a new map/different name/same size-settings.
then after saving that in the editor without doing anything to it, exit and open your broken map in explorer side to side with the new maps folder. perhaps copy your new map over to your desktop as backup for the reconstruction process and solving out what file kills the editor during load up.

Then just start moving files from your broken map to your new one: the staticobjects.con, terrain related files (heightmap, settings, textures), and so on...
keep in mind that probably something like a setting you changed or something you compiled (overgrowth or so) last time you worked on the map got freaked up by the editor during compile or auto-saving, so spare this kind of files/stuff for the first try.
Then fire your new map up in editor: if its possible you can add in more files from your broken map. Else use the backup on your desktop and replace old files in your new map again - it might be some trial and error until you get as much as possible salvaged but its fun to get to know the files and stuff that really makes your map :) This is a learning by doing so don't ask for too much assistance, at least not from me...busy
