Small, simple guide for new SLs.

Post by Copper.8 »

If you're starting out as an SL, obviously it's quite an intimidating situation. You're in command of up to 5 other people, and they're relying on you to make the right call in the field.
However, you must know that not everything goes to plan and everybody makes mistakes, it's what makes us human.

Firstly, you should try to do a role that's within your comfort zone. Although some may like a challenge, it helps your team more if you perform an easy role rather than doing a veteran one which you have no experience in. And it's easier. For example, you may want to do Logistics, controlling only a few people, driving/flying around delivering supplies etc.

Secondly, go at your own pace. If you like to plan and take your time before going into battle, then do it. You are the SL, you make the decisions, you do it how you want to do it. Even if the CO wants you to go faster, tell him politely that you're new and your doing it at your level. If you like to rush into things, go ahead, no one is stopping you. And if your squad members do not like that, don't worry about them, they can leave your squad and won't be a problem for you anymore.

Thirdly, don't bash yourself too much if you die in game or something goes wrong. As I mentioned at the start, you make mistakes, and in fact it is a good thing to do so. You learn best from your mistakes. So make sure you take note every time you get into a pickle, next time, with the information you now know, you will more likely tend to avoid that situation.

Fourth, keep trying new things. As you progress as an SL, you should expand a bit more, do new things, take a challenge. Because when you know the basics of SLing, it's time to go out there and take the bull by the horns.

Fifth and Final, play to have fun. If you die, have a laugh, learn from your mistakes. Getting killed is part of the game. Don't always play to win, playing to have fun can really do you good. And you might learn something too. Also, if you play to have fun, generally you're going to be a bit less stressed.
If you don't manage to kill an insurgent, don't go after him, he'll IED you.

If you don't manage to kill an insurgent, don't stay in the same place, he'll molotov you.

don't be afraid to give orders even if your squad mates might be more experienced than you.
if you have played as a squad member for some time you will know what kind of acts you think is stupid and do it your way instead.

also relax and remember its a game and that squad leading really is no big deal as long as your not trying to be "best squad" as mentioned above, take it in your own pace, if your in doubt you can consult your squad on what to do. Just remember that YOU decide if you want to take the advice or not.

try it, practice makes perfect and after a few times you'll get more confident at it and start enjoying calling the shots and doing things the way you think is the best. that's what i like about it anyway.
