Handheld Periscope

Post by badmojo420 »

The ghillie suit suggestion got me thinking about how the sniper could improve his recon/stealth abilities. Since, you can't just pop half your head above an edge, or around a corner to see whats there. You're forced to expose yourself partly, or fully in the case of corners. Which can end up getting you killed, and it's not very realistic IMO.

Cue the periscope...

I'm not too sure how widely these are used by the various militaries, but they would give the snipers a valuable tool to do their job better. Also it might not work for around corners, i'm not sure how the BF2 engine would handle that, but even if it was just for looking over walls, hills, etc, it would be enough.

discuss...

i have seen it in use with british snipers, if there is a spare weapon slot, its possible and if it doesnt take that long to model i say why not!

how about swapping it for the smoke ?
tbh imo if you are so close to the enemy you need to pop smoke your a little close to snipe and shouldn't be there.

the kit appears to only be using 7 out of 9 weapon slots so from that point of view its doable.

I like the idea but doubt it would add much in terms of gameplay, unless it has a zoom which I doubt it dose :p

Maybe could add it onto the low priority list for something to do, wouldn't be that hard to make might be worth someone from the community having a go at making it? ;)

SCOUT SNIPER PERISCOPE KIT NSN: 1240-01-571-5004

There is more info on them, it says you can spot targets up to 700 meters with them so I am assumeing there is a zoom and there is some good pics for modelers.

I believe this adapter is for attaching it to your night vision or spotting scope...

Customer Review:
"I don't know how quite to put it. Other than we need more of the SWATSCOPES and NIGHT VISION ADAPTORS. The reason being is that we have all the capabilities of shooting at night, with accuracy as well. The problem? It's only out to a short distance, due to the fact that the night vision scope is on the rifle and not on the spotting scope. With the night vision adaptor, I can also put the PVS-14 on the spotting scope and lock it in place with the adaptor. I have been able to spot enemies for up to and beyond 700 meters, enabling my gunner to engage effectively; which in turn gives me the advantage of spotting for him and other friendly units. Both, the SWATSCOPE and the NIGHT VISION ADAPTOR have been outstanding. The periscope itself is great. The problem? Every time we set up in a house we have to knock holes in the walls in order to effectively engage a target, in turn letting the enemy know where our position is. With the periscope, we can simply take over a house, and use them in order to look over the wall, and scan for enemy movement at the same time without compromising our position. The bottom line, every time we go out, we face a situation in which we need to look at the terrain and wish that we had a periscope or a NVA 4440 Adapter (monolock as we call it)."

Rather than snipotzors, i would give it to insurgents so they could make their ambushes.
Thus no zoom would be needed as they really don't have scopes anyway.
Maybe only to collaborator.

Why would civilians be running around with $568.00 periscope?

I'd run around with a $568.00 periscope, but then again, I don't live in Iraq.

I'll attempt to slap a good texture to her, I know nothing of how to impliment these things in game so give me time :S.

I'd also be happy to just send the maps and model to someone who wants to implement it or change something on it.

-edit- btw current form is 767 polys, 814 verts.

Nobody would suspect a milk carton on a sand dune/building roof!
