Mumble insanity

Post by amazing_retard »

Ok a day ago I lead an apc squad on Qwai river. I was on the EU RT server I think but I can't remember. I found mumble was a great program especially for vehicle operators, I would like to thank the people who made PR mumble possible. However once the combat started I ran into a lot of problems.

As a SL I have info coming from 3 audio sources.
First I have normal VBF2 voip.
Squad Leader mumble.
Finally normal mumble.

The problem is that I can't tell which is which, and all the info is just overwhelming. Too many people talking over each other, most of them are really excited, and half the time I don't know who said it!!!
For Example:
Squad Leader mumble: Enemy tow incoming
Me: what where who? Where is the TOW?
Squad VBF2: OMG TOW!!!! but I can't hear shit because someone might be talking over him, and I'm fing confused. Than I hear all this yelling over VBF2 voip, and normal mumble and my brains are about to explode. SDFU!!!!!

The Worst thing ever is pulling up in a middle of the battle... Omg you hear blue guys all around you fouling around, SL chat leaders talking, and your squad is also yelling. The problem is that a lot of times it all comes at once. *Blows brains out* OH man just imagine if we had a talkative commander omg.... It really sucks when I'm in combat and I have to worry about keeping my men alive, and all sorts of people are giving me info on mumble and VBF2 chat. Not only do I have to deal with all the talking and info, but I gotta listen for enemy and direct my squad! Holy cow I want a radio man to sort my shit out lol.

I'm sure I will learn to deal with this, but I have spoken to other people who agree its sometimes too much.
Thanks for reading my post and ty for mumble and PR :)

Remember guys, you don't have to be a passive force in the radio coms.

if people are talking too much , especially if they are sending non-urgent coms unecessarily, tell them to cut it out.

I just go "this is Rudd, requesting you lot sort the coms out"

Positional audio is pretty easy to identify, since it comes from a specific direction and isn't on 100% volume. SL radio is 100% volume.

The problem that your squad doesn't know ur on SL radio is a problem, but taht same problem exist when a commander is on duty with vbf2 voip anyways. so its no worse really.
Squad Leader mumble: Enemy tow incoming
it would have been much better if he had said

"*Squad number* Enemy Tow, grid+keypad, direction of travel"

the squad number makes sure you know where the person is in relation to the contact when you look at the map. And the grid etc are self explanatory. thats only about 3-4 more syllables with simple, easy to say words that give you a wealth of information without you needing much effort to decypher.

Certain players are really bad at SL coms (WELSHBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOY! edit + FEUERWAFFEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN!)
tell them!

Though it would be good if the SL radio could have beeps and shit

When I'm on duty with St John Ambulance, its a bit of a sensory overload when you are at a casualty, trying to sort out their problem, listening to them, your collegue, concentrating on your hands as you do whatever is required and then the radio starts going on and on- solution- turn down the radio to the level you can't hear it properly but can still hear your callsign. And thus that is what I do ingame if one or more of my VOIP options is overloaded.

Though, usually its just people get excited and can't help but say stuff. Tell them to keep calm and disciplined since half the coms aren't required.

I'm still using just regular voip, I get used to my gunner/driver fast, it really isn't hard to distinct after a few minutes.

Awesome you hit the point. Its just that people during combat get wayyyy to excited, and it makes everything harder. So having mumble multiplies this problem and sometimes my ears die. I guess I will gut used to it some how.

Yeah but the problem sometime is that people don't use the comms correctly. Stuff that's suppose to be said on mumble gets said on VOIP, which really sucks. Like Rudd said I would like some beeps like in vent etc.

Report anyone who is spamming mumble with useless **** and they will be kicked.

BF2 VOIP - You can kick squad members who spam this.

Mumble SL Channel - This is only for urgent info that needs to be communicated with other SL's - keep chat to an absolute minimum.
When using this channel, SL's should say who is talking and give grid locations eg: "This is squad 6 - enemy FOB in H6kp3" - It should not be used to ask for supplies and pick ups - you have the commo rose for that.

Mumble Local Chat - This should only be used to communicate with blue guys. You are unlikely to be near to many blue guys, except at the round start. If you find blue guys spamming ****, then report them to an admin and they will be gone.

trust me, as some one who squad leaders frequently you do get use to it, and the differences between the three. it can get abit loud in SL chan when there is 2/3 squads all attacking same place but its worth having them moments for the ability to be able to communicate to most of the SL's on the team at any time during the game.

my heaviest experience is VOIP+ mumble+ SL mumble+ Teamspeak and all this mumbo-jumbo on 3 languages
biggest problem is usually blue guys on local mumble because they're the hardest guys to make them shut up
hmm, maybe suggest to add new mute button for mumble, which mutes other channels except one you're in?
could be useful when you want to talk to another SL while lots of blues around

Slightly off topic but the thread title reminded me of this.

I hope the next release of PR Mumble incorporates the "Toggle Mute Self" and "Toggle Deafen Self" shortcuts as a set-up procedure during the initial install process. I think it would benefit those who are still wary of using it do the potential for spam and for those who do not know how to set-up their own shortcuts obviously. The biggest complaint I have heard regarding the use of Mumble besides it not working (still in beta after all), is the negative word-of-mouth spreading about bad experiences with it due to the spammy use of it.

That is the raw battlefield sound, the only thing missing is every single ambient sound, and gun firering aswell as all engine and VANNILLA voip sound, you would indeed have the "Sound of the Server" Interesting huh?

This is why mumble IMO kind of fails in a way. Ive played some rounds with a lot of people using mumble and the whole round rather then doing things in the game everyone was just complaining for everyone to shut up in mumble and this went on for the entire game/games Ive played.

Just my opinion and why i won't use mumble probably until it works and is less spammy.
