Project reality criticism

Post by NYgurkha »

I dont know how, but i managed to stumble upon the PR page on wikipedia and was pleasantly surprised that there was one.

What was really strange was that there was a paragraph for criticism towards PR:
Criticism

Project Reality's focus on reality has left many new players frustrated by the steep learning curve and the slower pace of the game, especially since both these aspects are very different from the unmodified version of Battlefield 2. The response of the developers to these criticisms has consistently been that this modification is not for everyone, or even most players. The response of the long term players within the community has often been to support this position with even more force and conviction. This sentiment from the "veteran players" (as they are often described within the community) has led some within the community to worry that they are alienating potential "veterans"... The most common piece of advise given to new players to Project Reality, is "Read the Manual."

Hmm...mostly true. The mod isn't for everyone. Some veteran players can seem snobby. And the most frequent advise given is "Read the Manual".

It just comes down to the more experienced players helping the newcomers. With a little help, there will be less "newbs" and more teamplayers to help fill out the squads. Mostly everyone can remember their first time and probably having someone answer their questions while they get through the learning curve. Now, there will always be some "noobs" out there but eventually they get bored and move on.

I can agree with telling someone to go read the manual if it is something that the manual answers well enough. However, there are some things (like the medic kit) that are better explained with another player. I know I try to help new players when I can. In fact, besides asking if everyone has a mic, I often ask, "Is anyone new to Project Reality?" when squad leading.

While it may seem somewhat rude to new players, if they actually did read the manual there would be ALOT of questions asked right there withought having to distract others, yes it is good to teach our future 'veterans' at the same time some things are easier if one just reads it, only takes ten minutes, if that.

Read the manual. Anything that has a manual has it for a reason. We've all read it.

No mention of the training events that have been put together by RCOMs...?

I do not agree with that, as mentioned here before; the Devs and RCOMs are doing a fantastic and hard job to help newcomers into the world of Project Reality. Thus the servers and events.
It's either the newcomers who are too lazy to participate in training events or training servers, or then they just miss these things by accident.

All the best,

Im going to say this as kindly as i can

The manual is so bloody boring its not posible to describe in words. make some interesting training videos or somthing, the way it is now is just a no go.

I only ever used it myself iff there whas somthing i did not understand specificly.

I newer ever read the hole bloody thing and il bet most off your hardcore veterans did not either you just played from the start or along the road as the patches got updated, etc.

One off the most demoralising things ingame for a neew players is to meet with arogance and be told to read the bloody manual especialy iff its a simple thing like asking howe to place a mine (just an examble) i have even seen peopel get kicked from servers etc for less lol because he whasnet proffesionel according to the server rules or owners.
Im realy tiyred off the PR players and there attitude. i like the mod and play it but i loose interest faster because off players playing the mod then the actual mod itself.

(spelling i know but im in a hurry)

I'm sorry, let's turn the manual into a novel. This part here about the hero slaying the dragon, that's about the revive system. And here where they meet that bar wench, that's about deviation

There are training vids on Youtube, just look for them.

The best thing new PR players can do is read the manual, attend different training events and watch those interesting Youtube videos. Personally, I have not found anything wrong with the manual. I have read it several times (wanted to make sure that I understand all aspects of the game clearly).
When you are eager to learn more and be the best player that you can be - you won't have any problems.

As much as I dont agree with how its written... whats wrong with asking that people "read the manual"?

You know? its like getting mad at someone for YOU not reading the directions.. well, its not "like" it, it IS that.

Thats written very poorly though and makes it looks like we dont give two sh*ts about new players.
Id hope that every new player and vet player understands the situation we are in. We WANT new players, we LOVE new players, but you gotta give a little on your side too, you know?

:)

I googled "project realty training" and got several youtube vids, a link to our forums of a collection of vids, and several other things ;)

They ARE there. :P Theres a really good one on deviation around here somewhere...
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe ... os&spell=1

Theres also the entire tactics section for most every position you can be in the game with countless accounts of personal training, methods that work, methods that dont. The PR forums really have TONS of ways to learn roles rather than read the manual... though you should still read it :)

https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f137-p ... strategies

But as far as personal servers, well, a lot of that is up the admins. If they require you to read the manual to play on their server they pay for...well, reading it, or at least not showing you dont know something is probably for the best... Though I would hope that they would tell you how to lay a simple mine[go prone]

would you lot care to rewrite it ehn? with some ingame footage and stuff? or is anybody else up for it since the wiki page is pretty limited and the critics part isnt all that neccesary.

Ive pretty much told myself to never get involved in Wikipedia editing. I know Id get sucked in and then between PR and editing the trolling of Wikipedia, constantly clicking "Check New Updates" I would NEVER get out of my chair and into the real world ;)

-The "Criticism" part was added by WastelandSoldier on June 12th, 2009. Maybe he had a bad experience :D . But seriously, that's not actual criticism, it's like criticizing Mount Everest for being hard to climb. It should be in a different section and revised heavily. Baaad mountain!

EDIT: Twisted, there's no such thing as "Real life", go work on Mumble nao!
