[?] UVW mapping?

Post by Bringerof_D »

Hello, i'm a student going into 3d modeling and animation. i'm having a lot of trouble understanding how to UVW map, and i was wondering if any of the devs involved in that step of the mod be willing to create a tutorial for me, or point me in the direction of a good one. (link i mean of course, not literal pointing)

preferably based around either 3dsMax 2010 or Cinema4d. (i found a good tutorial for 3dsmax but it only gets me half way since 2010 doesnt have "Texport" in the utilities)

Please if anyone could help me with this that would be awesome.

Moved to community modding.

This is one of the best UVing tuts I know of for beginners and up, it doesn't go into any advanced techniques etc but covers all the basics you need to know :)

well the texport thingy might be because that is a 3rd party software used to uvw map.

I would second this. I'm currently half way through it (just watching) and he explains everything and its easy to understand, you can definitely learn from this.

Download 'Texporter' - it's a UV mapping plugin/utility for 3ds max. Google will have the link :)

Cinema4d has good UV editor. But there are problems to export models to BF2Editor.
So max is better for bf2 modeling.

Anyone tried Wings3D for modeling then porting into 3D Max?

I Wouldn't mind modeling again, but if I am going to invest the time to do it. I rather not waste the effort if it is just not possible.

.obj imported into 3D Max then exported into BF2 format or something along those lines.

Yes, you can do that. I think Wings will also export to .3ds, which is another possible format.

One thing to watch out for when you import into 3ds max is smoothing groups and cloned vertices. If your smoothing groups look wrong after import, go into vertex mode, select all, then do a weld with a tiny (or 0?) threshold to remove any duplicates.

even after you do that your smoothing groups will need to be redone as when you weld all the verts all faces will want to share the one smoothing group.

The smoothing groups have always remained intact for me. But it probably depends on formats and versions.

This was years ago, back when I was using max 6. Can't remember whether I settled with using obj or 3ds to import.
