Time for a new Mouse :)

Hey all,

I'm looking for a new mouse again now that my Saitek Cyborg Mouse wheel is giving up again and since this is the 3rd or 4th Saitek mouse that I've had and all of them have ended up with there scroll wheels braking in one way or anouther I'm not really looking at getting anouther Saitek mouse, epically since they aint got any better ones than the one I currently have....

So ye really quite open here and just want to see what's on offer. Mainly looking for a big mouse, a good set of buttons, at least needs the standard 3 buttons and a "back and forward" button, if not more ontop of that aswell. Needs to be pretty comfortable too and not too worried about DPI, IMO its overrated

So ye, please let me know what you think would be a good mouse, please provide as much info you can about the mouse with also a picture or 2 on it too if you can.

You could check out the Razer Deathadder, or the Logitech G9, or the MX518. (couldn't find the G5)

I've got experience with the Razer Deathadder and with the G5.

The G5 is rather tall, compared to the Deathadder, and has got this special layer on it, which prevents your hand from slipping easily. The G5 is made out of excellent quality, and also provides you with the options to change DPI on the fly (i.e. with the press of a button on the mouse itself), and lets you change weight, which can be really useful. It gives you plenty of option to optimize it perfectly for yourself, which I did too.

However, I soon found out that the G5, although a good mouse, doesn't fit my hand properly, because it's not wide enough. Hence I went for the Razer Deathadder, eventually. The Razer doesn't provide you as much posibilities to optimize it for your own comfort, but it's better suit for my bigger hand. Take your time to pick, since you'll regret it if you got a mouse which doesn't suit your hand properly, like I had.

An important thing to look at, when trying a mouse, is wether you thumb can rest comfortably next to your mouse. If it doesn't, it can be very unpleasent after you've used your mouse for several hours.

If you can, go to a hardware shop somewhere near you, and ask if you could try several of the mice I mentioned.

The G9 seems to have everything, including a high price tag. I think the G9 would be the perfect mouse, considering it's got many options, and it's a lot wider then the G5/G7, but it does cost a lot of money.

the G9 is my favourite mouse, just love the size of it (I have quite big hands) It just feels great, has the buttons, and just feels 'Solid'!

Logitech G9 = Win

p.s. and the adjustable sensitivity 'on the fly' of up to 5 settings is great!

Cheers guys, the G9 dose look quite interesting thou dunno if its really long enough for me, looks wide enough just not long enough. The reviews for it seem good thou, will look into giving it a try if I can

Looks quite interesting, thou I can't say I'm a big fan of wireless mice tbh and I've heard that the new sidewinder stuff isn't really that good? Can anyone vouch for it or not? Might be worth looking into.

Got the G5 and love it, although I'm now tempted to go up to a G9 and sell my G5, mainly for something new and it just looks a bit nicer IMHO, the shape is odd but when I used one, it was dam comfortable.

Support and forums not very helpful
After a while my side buttons stopped working, forums and technical support no help, problem solved by connecting G9 before switching on my laptop if I connect it after they don't work.

My first proper gaming mouse so I am maybe not the best to ask.

I'd suggest this. Choose according to the mousing surface you prefer. If you prefer solid teflon coated or steel surface, I'd suggest a mouse with small surfing pads ( =like Logitech mx518 ) Small pads are easy to clean up and the shape doesn't matter. But if you prefer soft textile coated surface, the shape of the surfing pads matters a lot (as the pads are pressed into the surface a bit and act like skies). For example the Logitech G5 laser mouse I'm using now has long straight lines on it's big teflon surfing pads, which has a negative effect on the vertical accuracy. There is no way I'm giving away my giant Razer surface as my hand is very comfortable on it and it's simply a pleasure to work on it (when spending a lot of time in front of computer, one has to consider his health as well). G5 has noticeable problems with vertical accuracy on this surface but horizontal movement is very easy and smooth. Mx518 sligtly suffers from this problem as well but it can be completely eliminated if you buy additional teflon surfing pads and turn them into different directions. But the movement is not as smooth as with G5 because the pads are much smaller than on G5. You can't really go wrong with Logitech G5, Logitech G9, Logitech mx518, Roccat Kone or Exactgame EG-9000 (even though the last one is not expensive and looks ****, it counts to the very best mouses ever and was used by US military for their sim games) when it comes to the ergonomy or sensor quality so I suggest you take the surfing pads into consideration as well.

Go with the MX Revolution. I have 2 of them. One for school and one for Home. Has more than enough customizable buttons. That you can set buttons per application. Does not come with adjustable DPI but default is 800.

Also you can check out the MX 1100. Similar to the Revolution with less features but does have 400-1600 DPI but thats something you dont care about.

Smart Shift Scrolling lets you adjust the amount of precision per application and adjust when to switch from click to click and Free Spin based on your settings.
Document Quick Flip: which you can customize to zoom, volume, Media, Thumbscroll, even multiple keystrokes. all based per application.

Anyone else have any comments on the Sidewinder X8? This mouse wheel is giving me hell when it comes to working with very high poly scenes in max and you spend ages loading zooming in the wrong way you wanted to

There is a very little known gigabyte mouse the GM-M6800, about £8 has a similar feel to a light G5 but is very cheap. Very very good feet on regular mouse surfaces. Personally you need to budget for a great mouse surface too, thats why i swear by my razer eXactMat - speed/control dual sided. Great wrist rest built into that.

the GM-M6880 is the fancier cousin, only about 14 quid, so still dead cheap.

Or the GM-8000 "Ghost" about 40 quid, that is your -high- end gaming one.

Natala swears by it, and she is doing a LOAD of toolset work all the time, albeit Neverwinter Nights 2 work Same principles apply though as you know.

I still swear by the G5, the weight customisation is really good if you change your style of play for different games. Its bulletproof too, never had a twitch of wear and tear on it. the braided cord really helps to have that "pull" that other cords can have on the mouse when you are using it.

Razers and all that stuff are an acquired taste, and i feel overpriced.
