Performance problems after a while

Post by RUMSMURMEL »

Hi,
first off al my system settings:

CPU: C2D 2,66 GHz
RAM: 8GB dual channel
Graphic: 8800GTS 768MB
Sound: XFi-gamer
Win 7 Ultimate 64 Bit RC1
all drivers are up2date (i changed the XFi and display drivers it makes no differences)

I have always the problem that i play for a while (1-2 maps ) and mostly its like after 1,5 hours the performance decrease drastically !
it becomes like a slideshow and switching from unzoomed/zoomed and back becomes a 5 second thing !?!

The CPU load is always around 50% and th maximum of RAM that was in use for the BF2 .exe was around 2,4 GB.

I remember that i have this problems sometimes under WinXP SP 3 as well!
I never had this problems with other games like Crysis, CoD, COH.
after i shutdown PR and restart it (only the game) it runs smoothly for 1 or 1.5 hours!
It feels really like the RAM or the GraphicRAM is running full.
I exclude also thermal issues!

any suggestions ??

GPU might be getting to hot and throttling the clock down... thats my guess

the rubber banding, zooming in and out twice etc. i have too sometimes. I know for sure that those issues I get are server side related - they occur randomly and last sometimes only for minutes - sometimes for the rest of the round (happens esp on Ramiel, due to the fire barricades i have been told)
you should ask if other ppl are experiencing the same - if so its generally not your pc but the server

i suggest you check your background tasks for suspicious programs
also turning off antivir software and indexing service might help but thats just guessing
another thing could be that your hardware (prolly mainboard) is failing

since you have 8gig dual channel ram i suggest turning off "page file" completely (i did and i got xp64 with 4GB Ram -> no problems) [usage of page file decreases your performance]

to check if there is a hardware failure you could check the ram using memtest.exe (built in tool i think) errors reported by memtest can either mean ram sticks are broken (removing all except one and trying could help you find the broken one) but it can also indicate that the mobo is broken (ram slot or FSB, NorthBridge, SouthBridge)

btw running PR in medium to low settings so i really think my hardware is getting bored :-) !

Make sure you are not running BF2 in any compatibility mode.

Given all you've done so far, consider checking your MoBo's BIOS revision. Based on my experience (after a RAM upgrade that the MoBo didnt really like) even if the release notes don't talk about what you think the problem may be it can end up fixing it.

The problem I had some months ago was I updated RAM from 2GB to 4GB. Performance went down to almost frozen. It ended up being a BIOS revision update.

Good luck.

right click your PR shortcut and click properties
then the compatibility tab
check "Disable Visual Themes" & also "Disable Desktop Composition"
"Run this program as an adminitrator"
make sure it's not running in compatibilty mode either.
