I currently have v0.85 installed and want to update to v0.87 so I can get back into PR.
Should I patch to v0.86, and then patch to v0.87? Is that the best process to follow?
I already have BF2 patched to v1.50

Sure, you can do that, but you need to find download links to 0.86 patch around the web.

Would it be better to just totally uninstall PR v0.85 and then do a clean (full) install of v0.87?
