2 GPU's or 1 Great one...?

Currently using a Nvidia 9800 GT 512MB in my system See Here for systemand looking for a Upgrade.

I'm up in arms about my GPU, Now while it does handle Most things I through at it I find myself wanting MOAR (as most of us do). But due to my board being a GIGABYTE GA-MA780G-UD3H I am limited to ATI in Crossfire if I go down that road.

Only problem is I dont get along well with ATI lately...well ever. Every single ATI card I have had dies a horrible pixeled death.

On the other hand I can stay on the single card path and keep up my love of Nvida.


Any suggestions on what would be best??? I mainly play games and do some map making + rendering. Budget is about $450 australian.

Wait for the GF300's if you want a card that should kick ***, but expect to pay for it.


It is rumoured that the GTX260, 275 and 285 are going EOL soon (atleast by certain manufacturers) so if you desperately want one of them, snap it up soonish.



The whole 2 cards vs 1 card is a long debate, some say Xfire/SLi is still an immature technology, but having never had more than one card I can't comment, I'd stay with one single to be safe though, less power aswell (if that's what you're into.)


The plus side of staying single card is you can get a BFG nVidia card, and their warranty kicks *** (Guy had an 8800GTS replaced by a GTX285 OCX )

The Fermi (GT 300) will be pure and utter overkill for such a CPU. (the high-end versions that is, no info about any mid-end versions so far) And it sure as hell going to take some time before they'll release any affordable versions of the GT300 series.

Anyway, I don't think you'll be needing a new card, since you said yourself that it handle's most of the things you want to play perfectly fine. Since ATi isn't an option, I can skip that one too. And then there's the CPU, you could get more out of it, but a new ATi/ nVidia high-end card will be overkill. So the only option I see for you, is to wait and keep on playing with a good card.

Regarding SLI/ CrossFire,

I currently got SLI, and hell, get a single good card, rather then two slower one's. Not every game supports SLI/ CF, and experience taught me that one faster card, is usually better then two slower cards...

Yeah, unless its on a huge rez i dont really see the point. I would stick with that 9800 until something much more juicy comes along.

Problem with waiting for the 300's is I only have two arms and two legs. While I can sell my right and just do both steering and shifting with my left arm. I need both legs to drive (not buying an auto).

Not really worried a huge amount about the power, and while I would like to stay Nvidia if possible I would go over to the dark side with a little more pushing.

1 single big one is sounding more and more like its the right way.

Res is being played at 1440 X 1260 (i think those are the right numbers) on all games.
