Commo Rose: What should preset messages be?
This is in response to the Commo Rose thread (now closed) in the 'PR Highlights' section.
Since the Commo Rose is undergoing an overhaul for v0.9, I was wondering what ideas people had for the preset messages.
A few I wanted to see:
"Incoming!"
"Spread out!" (SL order)
"You're blocking my shot!" (appears as "Blocking" in CR) [newbie players tend to do this]
"Flank Left / Flank Right"
I was just watching a gameplay review of 'Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising' and the interface is quite sophisticated. The game also intuitively adds info to the message (e.g. when you spot a player, the message specifies exactly what kind of player--same thing when you pwn someone). I was impressed.
I wanted to know what options are available using BF2's Commo Rose. For example, would it be possible to add an item list to each field (i.e. as is the case with kit request--or the original 'spotted' function)? So for example, could you get a list of tactics when right-clicking on 'Attack' or get a list of different requests when clicking on a 'request' field?
Very interested in interface so appreciate any replies.

Re: Commo Rose: What shoudl preset messages be?
Forgot to add: part of the the idea here is to enable the Commo Rose to cover most of the things players would need to communicate to each other without the need for VOIP. (For people who don't have or want to use VOIP and to simplify things, avoid miscommunication, etc.)

Sounds pretty bad ***, problem is though, when you shout in game "FLANK RIGHT!" the enemy might hear that. And if your MEC, and your yelling Flank right, ittl go like "SHASKE BUBBLA SHUBBEDI DUUU!" And that might not make people actually flank right, they might turn around, look at you and go WTF?!

Problem is that if you want new commands, you have to do new voices for every faction. Unless you make them silent, but that feels kinda useless tbh.

Kinda ruins game-play when you got a chinese commander dawg talking if hes close byDraakon wrote:Go to audio options and enable "English voice overs". Whit this setting enabled, you always hear English voice overs, no matter what side you on.

I think the commo rose is fine as it is, anything more complex you should be saying over VOIP.

Need a "reloading" when manning .50 cals. "You're in my way" isn't really needed as you can just move your fat *** and get a better view

Re: Commo Rose: What shoudl preset messages be?
People shuoldn't be incouraged not to use VOiP I hardly ever see anyone without VOiP in the servers i play. And if i do get someone into my squad i tell them it's pretty much mandatory to get a mic. First of all because its fun and second because you'll be able to join mumble and that's dubble the fun.sickly wrote:Forgot to add: part of the the idea here is to enable the Commo Rose to cover most of the things players would need to communicate to each other without the need for VOIP. The commo-rose is fine as it is, it serves its purpose and most the things you see on the commo rose most people just yell over VOiP/Mumble. Like reloading, get out of the way, move your ***, calling out friends or foes and the flanking should always be a Sqleader decision.

Re: Commo Rose: What should preset messages be?
The use of voice-over is not something I promote in combat, as enemies can hear it as well, but anything in it should be tools for inter-squad communication where mumble is not available.
The "Infantry! Gather around me!" one is pretty redundant, but I use voip and I don't want to be too hard on the voip-less.
"Follow me!", "Infantry spotted!", "I could use a little help here!" are examples of useful inter-squad com, IMO.

Re: Commo Rose: What should preset messages be?
Better option would be outer squad comms.
So you yell out things like, incoming, , cover us, flank right, flank left, hold fire etc...
So it they are not on mumble they understand what you want to do...
Those things wich are currenty in, are simple to say over voip really...

Well you have to keep in mind that a lot of the voice overs are currently from vanilla BF2. So if you were to add these new commands, they wouldn't match the voice of the others.sickly wrote:This is in response to the Commo Rose thread (now closed) in the 'PR Highlights' section.

The problem is deviation - even a small step your deviation goes sky high, therefore the person to move should be the 2nd one to arrive there.GoreZiad wrote:Need a "reloading" when manning .50 cals. "You're in my way" isn't really needed as you can just move your fat *** and get a better view![]()

Something like fall-in would be the one I would use as a squad leader, but luckily I have this beautiful thing called voip
To be honest, mumble usage solves the majority of the need for these types of commands, as you can relay exactly what you want to say, rather than a preset voice over. And anyone who isn't encouraging mumble by now gets a big sad face from me and this guy:

Yeah sorry, I just remembered to add that later.rampo93(FIN) wrote:Please use the edit function when you need to add something so you dont double-post.

I can't count the number fo times I've seen a guy sneaking up on a team mate and all I can to is blurt out the generic, 'Contact!,' 'Contact!', or I'm being shot at and nobody realizes Imo best thing is to be able to to give proper orders as SL.
Unfortunately, all messages have to be team audible otherwise there's a an issue where VOIP-users will have an advantage because they can communicate without being heard (i.e. VOIP channel isn't audible to enemy players, or even non-squadmates if using squad channel).Wicca wrote:Sounds pretty bad ***, problem is though, when you shout in game "FLANK RIGHT!" the enemy might hear that. The automatic messages like, "Medic!" can be universally audible because it triggers whether you're using VOIP or not.
The other secondary issue is that if you for example actually speak Chinese and you play as US, you'll be able to understand what the PLA characters are saying, giving you an unrealistic advantage.
LOLElektro wrote:Well i can understand all the MEC common rose now.. Thats kinda scary![]()
That is a problem if they got a specific thrid party to do the voices; I always thought what I was listening to were members of the dev team.Zrix wrote:Problem is that if you want new commands, you have to do new voices for every faction. Even for basic stuff like warnings? I remember one time I was warned by another player using VOIP that there was an enemy near me, so I turned around and pwnd him. Had he been dependent on the Commo Rose, he wouldn't have had any way of warning me except by using the 'spotted' function over and over (something that is usually ignored by players). By the time I checked the mini-map (this was playing BF2) to see what he was referring to, I'd have been toast for sure...most certainly had I been playing PR where the spotted function is disabled.Jigsaw wrote:I think the commo rose is fine as it is, anything more complex you should be saying over VOIP.
And as I said, plenty of people are uncomfortable using VOIP on public servers for one reason or another.
Hey! Who you call'n fat ***?!GoreZiad wrote:Need a "reloading" when manning .50 cals. "You're in my way" isn't really needed as you can just move your fat *** and get a better view![]()
Some people don't use it in order to maintain anonymity (i.e. voice is definitely personal identifiable information), others because they are shy, other because they can't speak clearly or the language used (usually English) isn't their first language. There are legitimate reasons.0blivi0us wrote:People shuoldn't be incouraged not to use VOiP I hardly ever see anyone without VOiP in the servers i play. Half the time I can't understand what the SL is saying because it's so muffled.
It can always be muted for the enemy team.doop-de-doo wrote:The use of voice-over is not something I promote in combat, as enemies can hear it as well, but anything in it should be tools for inter-squad communication where mumble is not available.
One from OF2 that I found to be quite good is the "Spread out!" message. I can't count the number of times my squad has been way too close together where on nade could wipe out the lot.doop-de-doo wrote: The "Infantry! A really helpful one would be, "Halt!" Ever try to stop someone from driving over a mine or going through a booby-trapped doorway? By the time you hit the VOIP channel key, he's already been blown up.
DOn't understand what you mean here. Are you talking about the general preset messages (as in, non-squad)?ChizNizzle wrote:Better option would be outer squad comms.
I figure it should have the whole range from basic "Cover me"--another good one that is sorely missing--type stuff to more complex tactical commands.ChizNizzle wrote:Those things wich are currenty in, are simple to say over voip really...
The reason I'm interested in the list function is because the primary message would be what you get when you click, but alt-clicking gives you the list with the more detailed/less essential messages.

Yeah you're right but how difficult can it be to get a buddy to do the voice? Manipulate it if you need to so it's not identifiable (was thinking giving it that raspy voice the Half-Life 1 soldiers have). Personally I'd like the Commander messages to be a woman's voice--more contrast and nice to listen to...what you don't think a chick can do the job?! (No pun.)

Mumble's pretty cool but I still personally prefer the presets.
Also something that you can get from presets is more vocal emphasis and immersion. Getting a professional sounding "Requesting immediate assistance, over!!!" beats the usual, "heh yeah I think he's over there by the thing...yo dude get over here...aw shit man I just got pwnd...yo somebody revive me."

Re: Commo Rose: What should preset messages be?
If I'm honest - I think some aspects of your idea are feasible (whether they're needed is another matter) - but the suggestion as a whole is far too complicated and would take a lot of time that the DEV team probably doesn't have.
What your idea suggests:
Q + Left Click + Right Click + Left Click = "Cover the left flank, with your rifles! Chaps." (I'm guessing that's what the Brits would get judging by previous voice overs)
As opposed to:
Hold B (Default Voip command) = "Cover the Left flank Johnboy273" (Generic name used as an example...)
Or of course use your mumble key!
Your reasons for having this implemented aren't really strong enough in my opinion - perhaps some people are too timid to chat over voip (Unfortunately the DEVs aren't councillers) or maybe don't want their voices recognised by high-tech software (??? lolwut) - but as I've said I don't think the demand for cool or in depth comma rose options is really that large.
Just my thoughts.

I meant : commands that would benefit other squads, so you dont need to use mumble to talk to them, but can use those commands to do so.

Re: Commo Rose: What should preset messages be?
The thing I need the most is "Stop!/Wait!"
Whenever I request a APC or helicopter evac for my squad, and they leave some of my guys behind just because they don't read the chat. If you could say "Wait!" to the APC driver and he'd hold for a moment, I know my blood pressure would go down.
And the simple command "Stop!". Use it to tell your squad to cease fire. To tell your tank driver to stop. 3 grenades are enough, you don't need to throw more. Just stop.
These two commands are so simple and so useful, how they left those out in vBF2 is beyond me.
