Enable lock-on with SA-7 on abrams

Post by boilerrat »

I move we enable the abrams to be locked onto with the SA-7 as it's gas turbine engine shoots out exhaust in the thousand degree range.
The 9K32 “Strela-2” (Russian 9К32 “Cтрела-2” — arrow; NATO reporting name SA-7 Grail) is a man-portable, shoulder-fired, low-altitude surface-to-air missile system with a high explosive warhead and passive infrared homing guidance. -Wikipedia
Infrared homing refers to a passive missile guidance system which uses the emission from a target of electromagnetic radiation in the infrared part of the spectrum to track it. Missiles which use infrared seeking are often referred to as "heat-seekers". -Wikipedia

AA should stick to keeping the skys clear, and not chasing after tanks imo. :?

It is realistic, possible, and most likely has been done IRL.

It may be able to lock on but the warhead would do very little damage to an armoured vehicle. It is designed to explode near the target with thousands of tiny pieces of shrapnel that damages vital mechanical and electrical aircraft components.

To penetrate MBT armour you will need something more substantial than an SA-7.

"Most likely has been done IRL". No offense, but who would be stupid enough to try to engage a MBT with an AA missile?

Ahh, I see. But couldn't it destroy the engine though?

Since its on the back of the tank?

even if its able to lock(which is doubtful on it own), it will be useless, because as its mentioned in your "source" it has high-explosive shrapnel warhead, which is pretty useless against tanks
you can also look here SA-7 GRAIL (9K32M Strela-2)
and find out that minimal engaging altitude is 18m

Picture this, you and your favorite taliban friends are sitting on a hill with your goats walking around grazing and waiting for an apache to come by to shoot down with your Sa-7's, instead an abrams tank comes by and starts getting a look at you which most likely means you will be dying.

What do you do?

A. Raise your left (of all things...OMA) hand and shake it at them

B. Take your SA-7s and attempt to take them out?

Still, it doesn't matter. The missile is a fragmentation explosive, i.e. it doesn't have armor piercing properties like TOW, RPG, SRAW or even RKG-3.
C. Run away...
D. Hide as quickly as possible.

Don't waste your AA round just to scratch the painting.

A fifty caliber doesn't penetrate tank armor, why would SA-7 fragments?
