Riding Tanks

Post by TheWhaleHunter »

I thought of this while playing Kashan the other day. And I did search the ***, couldn't find anything like it. But sorry if it's been brought up before.

To be able to ride tanks as infantry.
What I mean is that you would be able to sit on the sides, above the wheels as a form of transport.
I don't know if this ever happens in modern warzones, but I've seen pictures from WWII where tanks transport infantry sitting on it's exterior.

I don't know how realistic this is. But getting lost in the Kashan desert and seeing two tanks passing you by, and you know you'll just have to run forever is kinda annoying.
Maybe there could be some penalties? Like the turret not being able to turn fully (we don't want to get hit in the head by the gun), or maybe reduced speed (the driver drives more carefully to ensure the safety of the infantry sitting on top).

So I'm just posting to see what you all think about this idea. Is it realistic? Impossible to do? Just plain stupid?

Thanks

i dont think infantry would be riding tanks on a combat situation where encountering tanks is remotely possible.
when you see that in wwII, they arent in a combat environment. if they were they would be out patrolling ahead.

You are correct. But if we know all enemy tanks are north of the bunkers (Kashan) and we need to go from MEC main to bunkers, and so will a tank. maybe one could hitch a ride to somewhere south of bunkers, out of reach from the enemy tanks.

It would also be a way of "enlargening" the maps. Making it feel like you're riding to the frontlines to support them and not being in a combat area all the time. Still you could be ambushed on your way. But I'm sure tanks transporting troops during WWII got ambushed as well.

^ true but often tanks aren't in the middle of a battle they're aorund the edges of the map firing on key positions, and if you get shot while in the tank well then its sometihng that happens just like getting shot while in an apc, it may be annoying but its life

While I like the idea of giving infantry a ride, I see a problem with this;

Since the player models have a bullet collision, wouldn't the soldiers sitting on the tank act as a human shield, making the tank covered in infantry more likely to survive a fight?

I guess there wouldn't be a way of coding anti tank shots going "through" the infantry if they mount the tank, or maybe "be a part" of the tank? Though I guess the first option would disable the infantry from taking damage even if the tank has been hit.

That just made my day. When you think of it, if the shell was to hit the guys sitting on the tank, than the splash damage would treat the tank with maybe half of what it would do if it was actually hitting the tank.

Yes, hopefully you can make just AT weapons pass through them, because making the riders invulnerable would bring in a ton of issues.

Sure i mean ..... it would be nice to fit like ... 4 people on the roof mabey not a WHOLE squad cuz that sorta defeats the purpose of an APC lol ..... im up for it just for utility usage

Dont forget that the most a vehicle in BF2 can hold is 8, so that would be 5 extra infantry on the outside if all three crewman positions were being used. I like the idea and hopefully there would be a way to get by the human shield problem.

Would'nt people grab Hat kits and fire from the tank, effectively making tank combat rely strictly on who has the most Hat kits with them? And what about lasing? Whats stopping an officer or sniper hitching a ride and lasing enemy armor from the tank? Might make tank to tank combat less effective, or fun for that matter.

...I don't know, its an interesting idea, but I hope it could be arranged that you have to have a specific kit to ride on the tank, and can only carry out a (Like rifleman/medic/officer are the onlt ones allowed on it, and can only use binocs and rifles) or something...

EDIT: Wait, better idea, make it so you need a crewman kit, so the only reason anyone would need a ride is that if another tank goes down, the surviving crew of that tank can hitch a ride back to base on the back of another.

Yeah, it's not for full squad use, just for quick relocation and shorter transport.
And an APC still allows you to sit inside of it, so you're way more protected than sitting on the exterior of a tank. And isn't the APC faster then the tank?

the point of this is, usually every PR has enough transport, so that this is just unnessesary and dangerous

Guys, If I were in the infantry, and I really wanted to fry my sperm into the most abhorrent mutation known to man kind, I would sit on top of a tank laden with DU armor.

I really dont care if the name says "depleted," if it were depleted, then it would not still be uranium.

However, in game it sounds like a wonderful idea, just not the kind of Idea that I would want to implement in RL.

Maybe if this is added to the game I can finally live out my dream and ghost ride the whip.
