Open control panel -> programs and features, sort it by installation date and see what you have installed lately.

Are you running anything with a directx overlay, like Fraps for example? I don't know if that's what causing this though..

I too have this problem with running BF2 on the steam. This is a newly built pc running w7 pro x64.

Is it my anti-virus? I'm using Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 (I don't really want to turn it off). I'm not using fraps, vent, or mumble. My drivers are up to date. Could it be the Ati CCC or lightscribe control panel?

alright guys I fixed the problem this may help a lot of you.

Evenbalance.com
-Updated punkbuster by going to evenbalance.com (theres a whole thread about it on this forum)
-Then removed pknbstrA and B from my firewall, and then manually-re-added them.
-I then went into the Battlefield folder, went into the Punkbuster folder, and ran the punkbuster service test and everything was Green/Ok'd/Yes/Good
-I made sure anything like RivaTuner was exited/off. (program to overclock your graphics card but mandatory for anyone who uses one of the gpu monitor gadgets for windows 7)
-Again, closed all my gadgets
-Shut down Xfire and anything else that might overlay the game.

In case you run Steam, please do the following:

* Open Steam
* Go to File-Settings
* Go to the tab in-game
* Uncheck the "Enable Steam Community In-Game" checkbox
* Press OK
* Restart Steam

Thanks for the update. I turned overlay off in steam and that seems to have sorted out my issue. It seems that merely ending the steam overlay.exe process isn't enough and you need to disable it in steam too. Played for an hour or so just now no problems. Thanks again!
