Black Screen Then Crash/Fixed!

Post by Decayed Innards »

It happens to me everytime I try to load the game. I've read the other posts here about changing the refresh rate so I went from 60 to 75, without any change. I also ran the compatability test, ran it as administrator, ran in XP Service Package 3 mode, and still no luck.

What happens is I start it up as an administrator, the PR load screen comes up, followed by the BF2 load screen, and then the screen goes black. It turns a lighter black, flashes the desktop, goes back to a dark black, lighter black, and then a dark black before crashing to windows without an error message.

I managed to run Task Manager just before it started once and found that both BF2 and PR were running, I'm sure this is normal but I thought I'd mention it since when I used to play PR in .87 there was never a BF2 loading screen.

PLEASE HELP! I just want to play this awesum game!

When a game does not work at a Lan or something we joke " Tech night! " where we have to fix the problems and turns into tech support :( We have the same problem.

Found this. It might help:
The problem is that something is telling BF2 to load a resolution that your monitor or video card doesn't support. In my case it was my new widescreen LCD.

That "something" is actually 3 files in the "C:\Documents and Settings\[Your User Name]\My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles" directory. In that Profiles directory are 3 folders called 0001, 0002, and Default. Inside each of those 3 folders is a file called Video.con. You need to open each of those 3 Video.con files and search for the line that says "VideoSettings.setResolution 1280x960@75Hz". Change all 3 files to a resolution & refresh rate that you know the monitor and video card support, and BF2 should work like a champ again.

After a crash it's always a good idea to run battlefield cleaner to flush out your video cache files

Still no joy?

Trash your BF2 cache files
Path:
C:\Users\'your user name here'\Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache

Throw EVERYTHING inside the folder named cache away.
don't worry the files will be replaced with new ones when the game restarts.

Still CTD?

OK
Some other things you can try before you uninstall/reinstall.
Backup your BF2 folder that's inside your documents folder. Once you have a backup delete the original from your documents folder.
Try starting PR from your PR shortcut
a new default folder is created
link to your online account.
If all goes well (CTD gone) all you have to do to get your custom settings back is copy your 'control' file from your backup to the new profile folder.
path:
C:\Users\your user name here\Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\0002
note: you may not have a 0002 folder so use 0001
"There's nothin' like a nice piece of hickory"

I play on TeamPlayersGaming where it's all about the teamwork.

I followed all of your advice to the letter, minus the deleting cache part as there was no folder labeled cache in /battlefield 2/mods/bf2, and yet still no avail. Also, with the first piece of advice I didn't find a 0001 or a 0002 folder, but I did edit the default/video file. I found it was 800x600@60Hz, so I changed it to what my actual resolution is set to right now, which is 1280x1024@75Hz, but no go.

Seems like the games I've paid money for have been going bonkers on me lately, moreso than games I Torrent. First Hearts of Iron 3, and now Bf2 PR, what's next, is my CS:S gonna abruptly stop working now too? :sadpanda:

I'm gonna try to uninstall, and reinstall because I remember when I was installing BF2 it prompted me to restart when it was done, but I just installed PR after v1.41 and then restarted. Could that have possibly been the problem?

that is perfectly normal since pr.exe calls/launches bf2.exe
you dont see a bf2 loading screen because the mod can change its appearance - so the pr loading screen is the modded bf2 loading screen - all fine there

possibly? yes
probably? no

reset everything to not run admin/compatibility mode it should run fine under W7 without there adjustments

i take it since there is no 0001 folder you have not played/registered/loggedin to an account before you tried to start pr

try starting regular bf2 instead and retrieve/create a new account

if that fails start pr and/or bf2 with a shortcut command line parameter: "+fullscreen 0" this will enable windowed mode and should prompt you an error which you can then google and find a solution (post error msg here if you couldnt find a solution)

btw i do not see the neccessity to change default from 800x600@60Hz since every monitor should support that resolution

edit: forgot the 1.5 patch like this guy? https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f27-pr ... rting.html

Yeah after I made my last post I checked the forums again and found that guys post, so I dled the 1.5 patch, and I'm right now in the process of installing 1.41 before I install it. I'll edit this post with the results once it's finished.

EDIT: That was totally the fix, it works fine now but I'm having problems with the PB so I'm fixing that with the topic in this forum. Probably shoulda lurked another day before posting my problem, but thanks for the assistance anyways fellas. Maybe I'll see you guys on the battlefield someday.
