Mumble options not listed in L4gi's poll
So here are some options as far as Mumble and Voip go.
If we turn off Voip it will decrease the number of non-Mumblers on the server, however Squad chat is no more and you then need to be close or type more often.
I really want to know what you guys think as I don't really know of any server that has No VOIP and is Mumble only.

Re: Mumble options not listed in L4gi's poll
VOIP is absolutely essential for squad cohesion and teamwork within your squad. It is also essential for direct SL -> CO comms. Turning it off would be the biggest mistake a server could possibly make and would serve absolutely zero purpose.
Why would you decrease the communications options that are available? Mumble is about increasing communication options, not pushing away those who choose not to use it. Doing so would do nothing to help your new server. Instead put your efforts into teaching those who do not have it about the benefits of using mumble.
Also, FYI the reason you don't know of any other servers that do it is because it does not work.

Re: Mumble options not listed in L4gi's poll
I totally agree with Jigsaw. Disabling in-game VOIP is not the way to go, however much I love Mumble.
There is still a need for CO-SL comms, and a radio channel for the squad. Like Jigsaw says, Mumble is simply an extension of the in-game radio. It should not be used universally.
I love the way it is on PMC so far, with the two channel Mumble system. Keep that for some time and then decide what you want to do, is my advice. As for me, I'd be the first person to leave if you turn VOIP off.

VoIP OFF Mumble One Channel
But ONLY in case there is a whispering option in mumble, otherwise with VoIP ON.
So for now, with on, when possibility, off...

IMO: Two channel is lame.
If the server is a mumble server, and people aren't using it... they should be booted.

I've played without VOIP with mumble on
it is very very hard, and I don't think it would work with pubbers who you constantly have to shepherd.
but it is alot of fun

I voted one channel /w voip, but meant two.
If you had one channel, other people on the other team could hear you.. and that would be lamesause.

Re: Mumble options not listed in L4gi's poll
I don't see how people think one channel is more realistic? Really, being able to hear all enemies in a 70m is realistic now?
Anyway, it'd be awesome if we could have squad channels in mumble, where you could force centre. However it'd take lots of hassle ingame to switch channels, etc.

Ye with the new 1.2.2 you can and still have SL communications iirc. So keep working on the mumble 1.2.x. But anyway it would be a lot of work switching channels between every squad.[R-DEV]Twisted Helix wrote:It would work if we simulated squad voip in mumble
Before this all can be done automatic VOIP is a must in PR.

Re: Mumble options not listed in L4gi's poll
Turning VOIP off would make it alot harder. But I think it would add a pretty serious feel to the game since you have to regroup the squad. Make up a plan. Time it right. (Maybe give a signal like when you hear the first grenades go off you move in from the west.) But as Rudd said I dont know if it's going to work on public servers. But I say give it a shot and try it out for maybe three days and see how it goes.

Re: Mumble options not listed in L4gi's poll
Well it wouldn't , because we could do it clientside. Mumble already reads your positional information from in game, and the maker of that plugin , Snares, is working on extracting more information such as server IP, team and squad. It would be quite simple to then send a call to mumble to switch channel, just like the user had done it themselves.Himalde wrote:Ye with the new 1.2.2 you can and still have SL communications iirc. BUT I must add ... this is all at experimental stages at the moment ... and there is a lot of work to do, and we don't yet know how much lag there will be (as it has to be instant really). However if it all pans out, then we will have a very tight integration between mumble and BF2 ... so much so , that I hope the point will come when we can say , switch off the BF2 voip (which is laggy as hell anyway .. good couple of seconds sometimes ... can mean the difference between a live APC and a toasted APC).

Why should it lag? Doesn't these plugins just read the already incoming data-stream from the bf2 server?
Btw:
Could you guys alternate the plugin in this way that it sends default coordinates to mumble when it can't read any positional data from the server?
That would be a great solution to avoid unlinked people talking to all linked people in the channel but the unlinked guys could still talk to each other.

Re: Mumble options not listed in L4gi's poll
I rather think you misunderstand the entire way Mumble works. All the information is derived client side, there is no information coming from the server. Each person logged into the murmur server contains a packet of information which gives their location in the game ... this is pulled from the client that the player is playing on. The players mumble client then processes this information and derives the positional audio.l|Bubba|l wrote:@[R-DEV]Twisted Helix

I'd like to try VoIP off with one mumble channel, just to experiment some, but I wouldn't force it on others.
