I've never noticed that... not saying you are wrong or anything (I haven't ever tested this actually) but doesn't the whisper sound gets too much faded at long distances to be noticed, even as static?
I don't want to point out obvious flaws in this system but do you really think that teamchat would be more realistic?
I apologize for my lack of understanding. The only possible "flaw" would be that teamchat does take a little longer to type (as stated by gazzthompson) and that your buddy would have to keep an eye at the chat screen/name to see if you are the one talking...
Also, no, teamchat isn't realistic, but so is also, for example, the game engine-limitations which doesn't allow you to point out an enemy position...
There is actually a suggestion where the possibility of a squad member to put an observe marker which would vanish after 30 secs could be interesting, but afaik it is hardcoded/would overcrowd the squad's hud/wouldn't be seeable by friendly units from other squads.

Well, if he is close probably the other guy saw it. If not (ex. one guy popped up to see the enemy and back down) there would be 2 possibilities - the enemy saw him or not. In both occasions you just need to type quickly "5nmeNE" which COULD be understandable... If not (note the flaws I typed out after the second quote), then we need a whole new system...
