In case you forgot about that: BF2 has a folder in "My Documents" which you should delete too, all config settings are stored there.
Make sure Windows and all the drivers are up-to-date.
The freez sounds to me like a hardware/driver problem. Did you check your RAM yet (http://www.kfs.org/memtest/index.html)?
Did you check your temps? Maybe the system is overheating.
Check your system/file system integrity for defects: run "chkdsk c: /r".
Which sound card are you using? What are the audio settings?

pr crashed also to me in 0.87 and now in 0.9.
i have to lower my resolution setting and now it working fine.
hope you find solution.
also when im in game and want to change server,so i push esc,then it crashes to desktop.
i have noticed that this happens mostly in those laggy maps....lashkar,silent eagle,beirut,etc
