Random CTDs while playing

Post by Alselius »

Hi,
PR works correctly and well, all maps load without issues etc. except that I always crash to desktop about an hour after I've joined a server, also if I create the server myself. No errors, no punkbuster messages, nothing.
I installed BF2 complete, patches and PR, should be the right order. If anyone can help I'd be very thankful :)

Please include your basic PC info in your post :
Operating system = XP, Vista etc.
Systems specks = cpu/speed, ram installed, video card/video ram on card, type of monitor
Network setup = cable, 4 port 10/100/1000 d- link gamers lounge/ wired connection.
And a brief history before and after problem started.
Please describe when your CTD or problem hits and
what you have already tried.
The more info you can give the better your chance of getting a quick answer back.
You don't have to write a book,
but your basic PC info is needed to help you.

Good luck

PS You could try:
Increasing your paging file (virtual ram)
Buying more ram ( 4gigs is good for Vista)
defraging harddrive and keep 10-20% free ( unused) on it
Lower game settings
turn off unneeded background apps/services

OS is Vista, Core2 Duo E6550 @ 2.33 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 1GB GTX 295. Cable connection, 10 Mbps.
No history at all - I got this problem right after I installed. CTD'd in the first game I went to, don't remember exactly but about 1 hour into the game. Nothing noticable happened before, the game ran perfectly well and crashed without any obvious reason. I tried again with almost no background programs and set the priority to "realtime" from task manager. Still CTD'd.
I don't think it has anything to do with my hardware, it's not top notch but should be good enough for BF2. And my HD is 1/4 empty. So idk, can't see a reason.

Some things you can try:
Set 'textures' to medium if you haven't already done so.
Get 2 more gigs of ram if you can swing it.
Bump up VR ( 1.5 x real ram is good) defrag HD
Get a fast usb2 thumb drive (2gigs) for Vista's 'ready boost'
Lower some light settings in game.

Run game in 'windowed' mode to see what error message is with the CTD.
To do so
Right click on shortcut.
Choose properties from bottom of list.
Modify the text in your shortcut's 'target' window.
("C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\pr.exe" start +fullscreen 1)

Change
+fullscreen 1
to
+fullscreen 0

Should look like this in Vista ( XP lose the (x86) ):
"C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\pr.exe" start +fullscreen o

Then Google or use 'search' on Project Reality web page for the error message you get next time you crash.

Good luck
